move to Las Vegas? thoughts?
what are the pros and cons of living in las vegas?
i am debating on moving there just as something different. i currently live in the desert so im not worried about the heat. although ive been told its hotter than tucson by a few degrees. i am also not really a gambler, so i dont care for the strip. im sure ill go and play some black jack when relatives come to visit n so forth but its not a nightly thing for me. ive been told to avoid the northwest. true? whats the cost of living like? expensive? all in all, is it worth it? i would just tranfer with my job so im not worried about that. i thank you all for your opinions.
also, i will be making some road trips up there for a couple weekends from now til like julyish to help with my decision. its only about a 6-7 hr drive from me. and i have a heavy foot. if anyone wants to meet up and show me the daily life in vegas, that would be aweeessooomee.

NorthWest? Moved to Southern Oregon 4 years ago. Have not worked full time (over 55 yrs). Tax free state, maybe a good retirement state. S Oregon weather is like N CA. not heavy rain like Portland.

northwest vegas... (high crime area).
and i am no where near ready to retire.
i lived in oregon for about 6 months like a year ago, in corvallis, and it was beautiful. but it was a tad wet for me. im used to like 2 inches a year. and being as outdoorsy as i am i couldnt do it. beautiful summers tho.

i think vegas would be fun for a year. esp if youre young. just do it. i came close to doing that when i was younger and single. so many beautiful girls in vegas and things to do.
my buddies that live there do say it is a tad on the expensive side. get a job at the casino you could prob rake in some cash

Do you climb? Red Rocks is sick for that. I could definitely spend a few years down there and be happy with what they have to offer.

I went there last Spring Break. It was nice for a week, but I wouldn't want to live there. It's just not my style.
I stayed in Henderson one night and thought it was ok. I didn't really get to explore that part though.
I think I would get tired of all the traffic in Vegas.

as for climbing, i dont. only 2wd. hitting myself for that one. but i wouldnt mind tagging along with someone that does.
and the traffic... well, its probably the same as tucson. our streets are not designed well. still made for horseback basically haha. i know a guy that lives in vegas and he says of all the places hes been to vegas has the WORST drivers. because they have so many people from so many different places, and everyone drives different. so driving in vegas is always hard to predict what people are going to do. which is interesting. but i dont think that would stop me. my job consists of me driving to a different place everyday (roaming phlebotomist) and so i would think it would just make me a better driver in the long run.
also, ive been looking into Las Vegas Metro Police, and i really like their department. which is what i hope to do in my future. im about 70/30 right now on going. i have til about july to decide. i just need that extra push. or that warning not to.

Not sure if it helps, but one of my best friends spent a little over 2 years there and LOVED it. He's super into anything and everything outdoors. I was surprised because he's totally not the "Vegas" type of guy. But he said he only ever went on the strip when friends where in town. Said the Biking/Hiking/Climbing were all amazing.

there is a lot more to vegas than the strip. and youre close to CA for the beach, Utah for some camping. its a good location. and if youre not a gambler even better. you wont get sucked in. one of my buddies sold cell phones at the at&t store out there. making 100k a year if you can believe that. good place to find stars and hookups. make connections

It's funny you mentioned Vegas. There was just an article on yahoo about worst places for car theft...
10 Worst Neighborhoods for Car Theft- Yahoo! Autos Article Page
Dallas (just about 25 min South of where I live) is absolute worst in that article. Las Vegas is #2.
Of course, anywhere there's a lot of tourists, there's going to be a shady element. Not being a gambler will definitely help keep things under control. As others have mentioned, Vegas is expensive, but again, it is also a tourist destination. Do a cost of living comparison too before making the move.

the tweakers and crime is one of the reasons i want to move there. i have 2 alarms on my runner. one is a backup. if my battery is disconnected it turns on. put that on being i live 2 hrs from mexico.
but i want to be in law enforcement. so crime and tweakers just means ill have something to do all the time.
