I have Verizon. I have the unlimited data plan on my phone, which from my understanding, is not capped. I have read that Verizon is going to add a cap to their data plans. So will people who already have unlimited data get a grandfather clause, meaning they will still get unlimited and only new customers have a cap?

Recently jumped onto Android....love it!!
Not a Verizon Subscriber though.
Haven't heard anything bad about Verizon except that it's pricey.

No talks about capping it yet. If you have the unlimited plan, you will be grandfathered in until you upgrade or change devices.

I just bought an Iphone 4, I love it so much! IMO its the only option, Androids are inconsistent in quality, and also worth, when you decide to buy the new thing 1-2 years from now, I guarantee you will get more out of the Iphone than the Droid. Just my 2 cents

I thought there was a "cap" on Verizon's "unlimited" plan. A high cap, but still a cap. I tether my laptop to my phone using PDAnet when I'm on the road and still haven't reached the cap, so it's pretty high.
I don't see why the iPhone gets all the hype. It really doesn't offer anything special and does not allow for customization.
I like Android because they are constantly coming out with new products and they keep getting faster and faster.
I have the original Droid and am looking forward to upgrading probably at the end of this year. Unless a new iPhone comes out that is much better than the competition I think I'll stick with Android.

typically the known, non discussed cap on the unlimited plans is 5GB.

Technically PDAnet isnt an authorized app and they can track the data and wont be very happy.
There is no cap on the unlimited plans. The "cap" at 5gb is referring to the air cards that use to be on an "unlimited plan" but was really a 5gb plan. Thats why they no longer have it.
Long ago they use to have a true unlimited plan for aircards. Didn't last very long.

Why isn't it a "authorized" app? Does that mean the rest of the apps in the market are not authorized either?
How would they track the data usage and what would the consequences be?

Its not authorized because it allows you to tether for free. That isn't what Verizon allows you to do. Thats data you are supposed to pay for. Data is tracked by usage on the phone as well as data being tethered.
If they catch you they can cancel your contract.

Thanks for the answers! I am on Sprint now...been with them for >10 years. I recently dumped my Android phone (Samsung Epic 4G) and went back to my Sanyo flip phone for better reception (+ Ipod Touch 4G). I may eventually go to Verizon down the road when Iphone comes out compatible with LTE (Iphone 5 maybe?). But, definitely, i may have to jump earlier if Verizon is going to institute a cap!
As for the debate b/w Android vs. Apple, i had both...Apple won. Android is OK, but it does not nearly have the amount of apps available. Not only is Apple apps more populated, but you have CHOICES among a type of app. Whatever you search for, you have choices to choose from. On Android market, you are lucky to have 2 choices...most of the time, just one.
Another problem with Android (for me) was when i downloaded a movie. It took forever! With Itunes, i can download a movie via my very-fast laptop using the laptop processor...and then the transfer to my Ipod is quick and easy. With Android, you have to rely on the phone's processor to download a movie...and this takes a lot more time to do. Yes, it is nice to have everything on your phone, but Itunes make downloading quicker, which (for me) is more important.
The last issue with Android is that everything on the market nowadays is geared to Apple products. This is changing i know. However, currently, all car electronics work well with Apple, and ****ty with Android phones. I never got my Samsung Epic (at the time, top notch Android phone) to work well with my Prius entertainment system...USB connection sucked, BT Audio streaming sucked. On my wife's Acura, it did not even recognize the phone!
I hope the best for Android, but i am sticking with Apple after 6 months of Android. I do wish that Apple would send their Iphone to Sprint...would make my life much easier than having to switch to Verizon.

thai... that was amazing.
i currently have the android system and it bugs me how many errors there are with it. you get an app and it forces close, takes forever to download the app in the first place. my bluetooth is also not as effecient as i feel it should be. but i just figured that it was a part of life.
my sister recently upgraded to the iphone. and i was thinking about doing that as well considering i have never had any problems with apple. i just cant see to jusify spending the money they want for the iphone right now. and my droid is only about 9 months old. then again 9months is like saying i got my phone in 1960.

I am not sure if Verizon is doing the same, but I read many articles about how AT&T is tracking users who "illegally" tether and then sending out threatening letters. They are threatening to switch these people to the additional $20/month tethering 4gb plan.

I hope I don't get a letter. Maybe they won't notice since I don't use it that much.
