It's not that my town is crime free, it's just that the rate of serious crimes is so low, that I have more chance of getting killed driving to the gun store that I do by a person I would require a gun to protect myself from. The biggest time for crime is fri./sat. night at the bar and it's nice to know that if you get in a fight, it'll will be carryed out like men with fists...You don't have to worry about someone pulling a knife or gun out, I mean eventhough your fighting, there's still a gentlemen's code. But thats because we're small town folk, if you went to Ottawa or Montreal you could get stabbed, anything goes in the cities these days, but in the country we keep it more civilized.

I can't say this enough...I RESPECT the fact that some use guns to protect their family, which if required, is great in my opinion, just don't give me the whole "its THE real world". It might be "YOUR real world" but its not "THE real world". I as well as many people I know have travelled all over the REAL WORLD and not always in resorts and I/we never felt it was necessary . If you live in a dangerous neighborhood then get a gun, BUT use it for its purpose > PROTECTION and not a d!ck extension!

P.S. The narrow minded statement was by you: "I need a gun because I live in the REAL world and everyone who doesn't need a gun lives in a biblical oasis.
I usually hear "Ivory Tower" get used to describe academics who have no idea how the world works outside of a classroom, not really in the religious context. Gun rights/self defense advocates are sensitive to the fact that a lot of their fellow countrymen are completely oblivious to things like home invasions and kidnappings, so I didn't read that as directed toward you. Anyway, violent crime in America is at an all time low, so they'll probably get away with pretending it doesn't exist. I just don't want anyone telling me that I shouldn't prepare in case I'm that "statistically insignificant" guy who gets his front door kicked in by a pack of armed felons. Same reason I carry a very well stocked medic bag in the 4Runner. I'll probably never use it, but I'm well trained with it, and I'd rather not lay awake wondering what would have happened if I had had it.

One more thing your post raised. One of the great ancillary benefits of the passage of self defense legislation like concealed carry and "Stand your ground" laws is that idiots who use violence to get their way or as entertainment on a Friday or Saturday night are slowly learning that if someone doesn't want to fight, you really best leave them alone because otherwise you're just rolling the dice. And ironically, THAT is what civilization is supposed to be like.

Peace

When in Wa state i kept a hatchet under my seat in my 93 pickup. It fit perfect and it took me a second to grab it, only brought it out once because some kid who couldnt handle a beer came at me because he thought i scratched his new truck when i tripped into his bed.

Later that night he drove into a tree totaling his tacoma, still have my hatchet though.

Holy cow! That is possibly the most glaringly flawed logic I have ever read.

For the OP's question:
Me:
Gun? yes.
In the car? no.
Do I know how to handle them? look at my avatar.
Do I need them to keep me and my family safe? hell no. (You'd be surprised to know what I can do without one)
Will I use them if forced to and there is no other way out? hell yes.
What's the best weapon? the one in my cranium.

Have a nice day...

PS: My throwing knives are capable of much greater emotional damage. When you send "a warning shot across the bow" (so to speak), would-be attackers freeze, loose bladder control, and then go away quickly...

Some good reading resources on gun/crime stats put together by economics professor/researcher John R. Lott....this link takes you to a list of books he has authored:
Amazon.com: John R. Lott: Books, Biography, Blog, Audiobooks, Kindle

I recommend the 3rd Edition of his "More Guns, Less Crime..." book.

I also encourage you to watch and listen intently to this testimony of a woman who watched her parents get murdered at the 1991 Luby's random shooting:
Suzanna Gratia Hupp explains meaning of 2nd Amendment! - YouTube

Recent home invasions in my peaceful hometown area are why my parents have chosen to also be gun owners and practice at a shooting range:
Career criminal kept getting early release from prison...murdered couple during home invasion on their anniversary.
Retired missionaries murdered in home invasion.

It is my hope that I get through life without ever having to pull a gun. If I ever do have to, it is my hope that simply displaying the weapon, or verbally alerting the suspect that I am armed will diffuse the situation. I hope I never have to pull the trigger. I strive to avoid areas where risk of criminal danger is higher, and have employed multiple deterrent mechanisms at/in our home to serve as a warning.

Gun ownership for protection isn't about being any of the other media-perpetuated stereotypes. It is simply about being able to defend self, family, and others if the need be. When I took the CHL course, I purposely showed up early because I wanted to observe the fellow students entering. Out of the class of 50, the men and women appeared to be every day people, as opposed to weapon stockpiling extremists. When the instructor asked for volunteers to reveal what motivated them to pursue the conceal carry permit, it was interesting listening to the stories. Every woman who spoke had encountered a less-than-pleasant situation that prompted them to improve their ability to defend themselves.

I'm not very familiar the whole "Ivory Tower" concept but a quick search on google says it comes from a biblical song.

As for the Friday night entertainment, you've got that wrong. I fully agree that there are guys out there trying to start fights for fun. That's not me, and you don't see that around here because it the only bar. The owners know everyone (plus there parents/brothers/uncles etc.), so if some guy tried to start a fight for fun, he'll get banned plus everything else short of a headline in the local newspaper. BUT every now and then when there's friction between people you can get fights, even women, its not every weekend but it happens. I don't condone it but it's better then a stabbing or shooting.

As for everything else in your post. Just as an example (with the history of this thread I can't stress that enough...just an EXAMPLE), think of it like a mall crawler vs an offroader. The offroading 4runner will have tow straps, hi lift jack etc. while the mall crawler wouldn't. You wouldn't have towing strap in a mall crawler because it's not required; you'd never go offroad. It's like telling a T4R owner from Texas..."you might want to get some safety salt for your T4R, you never know where it could snow"....it's true that you never know FORSURE, but we got a pretty good idea.

Like it's been said previously in this thread...it's just our cultural differences, neither are right or wrong. If your carrying a weapon to protect you and your family because it's neccesary, then I stand behind you 100%, you gotta do what you gotta do. I just don't carry a weapon because it is truely unneccesary. That's not to say in 20 years with local cities expanding, my community maybe become more urban, then maybe I'll think about it but for now there is no need.

P.S. That was as painful for me to write as it was for you to read

Do I drive with a gun?

The answer to that should be self-evident.

I will +1 Thai's comment! I'm also a "gun nerd". I enjoy building ar15's as a hobby. Living in H-Town near gangs like MS-13, Houstone's, Latin Kings, etc...I believe its MY responsibility to protect myself.

I also believe its my responsibility to be a responsible gun owner and learn how to deploy my carry guns when needed. That means constant firearms training. Just having a gun isn't enough!

I was not suggesting at all that you are one of those clowns. I was trying to give context to the discussion by sharing our experience, not trying to guess how you live your life. I was just saying this- even with bare fists, people occasionally get killed. Fights outside of honorable small town folk are infinitely more likely to end that way. Down here, the law is allowing people to defend themselves against people who think picking fights is a good time. Hence, there are fewer people picking fights.

As for everything else in your post. Just as an example (with the history of this thread I can't stress that enough...just an EXAMPLE), think of it like a mall crawler vs an offroader. Totally agree with all. If anyone has a legitimate reason for not carrying it's small town folk in the middle of nowhere (and that's not an insult, I love small towns in the middle of nowhere). But I would add this- permit holders have shot dogs that were attacking children, and recently someone shot the back window out of a car that was submerged in a river allowing rescuers to pull two kids out of the car and revive them. It's a tool.

1. Gun nerds... LOL. You gotta be pooping me. Leave yours at home, I have mine with me so some low life can't take my life.

2. A guy who pulls his gun over a parking spot will quickly lose his right to carry, as he should. That he did it to an off duty cop only made the process that much more expedient LOL.

3. If you don't carry because you know you have a temper and you risk mis-use, then that is a very responsible and wise decision, and the only proper decision.

4. F Canada.... feel bad for the poor bas****s that live there.

5. Libs don't use reason, they use emotion. Gun control is a perfect example. It's nearly impossible for a person of reason to comprehend this, thus we're always so baffled at what comes out of their mouths.

First off, congrats...this is now 1 of the top 5 most ridiculous posts I've read on this forum

1. Who do you think you are? Why should you be able to protect yourself but gun nerds can't. That some seriously flawed logic.

2. What makes you think that a man that crazy is going to listen to the law. You can take his permit away all day long but that doesn't physically take the gun out of his belt.

4. Hahahahahaha...your so ridiculous it's funny. How does it make sense that you feel bad for me because I DON'T want to carry a gun. Jesus christ don't waste your time feeling bad for me because I'm happily living my life without carrying guns...if anything feel bad for me because I spend half the year freezing my azz off.

Now for a taste of your own medicine. I feel bad for you Americans. Why?? Because I know most of are good people and don't deserve the bad rep you have, but I feel bad because you have _______ (I couldn't think of anything nice to call you so I'll leave it blank) like yourself who taint your image with uneducated self centered comments like that.

For future reference, if you have issues with Canada or its laws that's your own problem... but when you start talking about "the poor bas****s that live there" that's when you start offending me and that's when it becomes my problem.

I always try to carry, when I'm not a work or school. Glock 23 has its own spot.

I didn't intend to offend you TRDCal. The "IvoryTower" was more of a story book/fairy tail reference. The fair maiden was always locked away in an Ivory Tower away from everyone. I would never knock someone's religious beliefs, unless your a Scientologist.

From how you describe the place you live, I wouldn't want to carry a gun there either. I never said I "need" a gun. I studied martial arts for many years, I can handle myself. I carry because most of the places I have lived it's a good idea. Most of my family members are law enforcement and military, so I might have a jaded point of view.

**** extention... does that work?

I hope this makes things clear. This is a thread about personal opinions. Try not to take them so seriously.

I always carry my gun in pocket when im not working. Work in another state and dont have permit for that state yet. But I always try and bring it whenever possible.

To jmoney you would be suprised how easily something like the gun loaded in your back seat could ruin your life for awhile. You never know when a cop may search your vehicle. Or when you end up having to use it to protect your self, you will be the one getting treated like the criminal.
