Just because somebody tells you to do something doesn't mean it's always the best thing to do.
If I am parked on an incline, I will use the parking brake. Any other time, I never touch it.
That's what I do in both auto and manual trannied cars and have never had a problem of any sort related to the use or lack of use of a parking brake.

I don't want to sound strange but i seen the automatic transmission in pieces, and there is no wear when you use it for parking. It is just one gear that has very square teeth on it and it gets jammed so it won't turn, so wear would not be a proper term for any auto transmission parking, but rear-ending is a problem. I also saw the same gear with a broken tooth on it which means that someone hit the car hard enough to break it off. Then that missing tooth got jammed in transmission's mechanics and that caused a problem... You get the idea. If you park wherever you may get into this kind of situation DEFINETELY use a parking brake!!! Big cities-- definetely.
Good luck.

On hills I always use it to aleviate strain on the tranny but on relatively flat ground like parking lots I never use it since the more you use the brake it'll wear too and if you live where it snows and feezes the brake will sometimes freeze especially on the older pickups and Runners.

I always do, now... That wasn't always the case. One time my Nissan 240SX came to rest in the middle of a busy parking lot after it moved by itself because I didn't have the Brake on. Luckily, I showed up just as the tow truck did.
The other time my Patrol Car moved at an incident scene and bumbed into my Sergeant's Patrol Car. Ooops. Boy did that generate a glare.
Make it a habit - it is worth it.

I use it every time no matter what surface I am on. One exception is when the temperature outside is really cold, like below 15 F. Even a 1 degree incline is a good enough reason for me. A 4000 lb plus vehicle moves on anything other than zero degrees. And what stops it

I never use it unless I actually park on a hill (which is never) as long as I'm on flat ground I dont see the point. I dont even parallel park so theres no danger of being tapped either.

I have notice for a while now that when I park the runner I hear a very faint clicking sound coming from the engine, better said the tranny. This happened every time I released the break pedal after putting the truck in park. I narrowed it down to the slight rocking motion that the truck had after releasing the break pedal.
So what I do not is to engage the Emergency break before letting of the break pedal and then putting it in park. This took care of the problem.
I became sensitive to hearing this noise because my wife drives a
