Rarely.

Put 257K on a Taco and never used it except for steep hills.

I've never had a transmission go out. Never use the PBrake. So I don't buy into the ruin your transmission deal.

Now a manual transmission, sure, always.

If my trans were to go bad with the car sitting still, I sure wouldn't have much faith in it when it was moving.

Toyota components are bullet-proof. Issues often arise from poor wiring, assembly and/or maintenance. Suspect those first.
Next only to our senses, the multi-meter is the most important electrical diagnostic tool. Spend $6 at Harbor Freight or $$$ blindly replacing parts.

So, help me understand this: if parking brake is on, and transmission is in "Park", the transmission park detent is engaged. So, if the car gets rear-ended, the transmission is messed up anyway.

You could engage the parking brake BEFORE sliding the transmission in park, that would make more sense. But, the shock of a rear end collision will overcome the parking brake and still mess up the transmission park detent ...

Unless you keep your transmission in Neutral, and apply the parking brake ... and then you might not be able to retrieve the ignition key ...

So where is the advantage of a parking brake ?

Always had a manual , always use parking brake

In my 30+ years of driving ive had 1 automatic, the rest have been manual. Always used the paring brake.

Always, helps the transmission hold the car and doesn't really wear anything out noticeably.

My previous car before the 4Runner was a manual transmission, so I'm coming from the perspective of always using the parking brake. But then, I seldom use the parking brake with automatic transmissions.

My 4runner is standard shift so yes we always use it. I'm so so thankful its a center console version unlike the twist pull in the dash with the pickups.

I park on a slight incline so, it doesn’t bang when I put it into gear.

Almost never use mine. Probably because of past experience with a sports car after a track day. Had turbo timer so left in neutral and put e-brake on. After heavy use on track warped rotors so I always worry about creating a hot spot on my rotors. Probably not something I should be concerned about with the 4Runner.

Removed it when I did the axle swap/disc brake conversion. So it doesn't exist any more. If I'm on a hill I turn into something so if it does roll away it won't roll away. I also have line locks front and rear, but don't use them for parking.

Always drove a manual so I'm in the habit of always setting the P-brake. I find myself reaching down into the center console when I park, also out of habit... slowly getting used to the T4R floor P-brake.
