Own both. They both have a lot of upsides.

Is this a fair poll on this board? Either way - someone above said it best - do you want to go 34k or 340k.

I'm new to the forum... I don't own a 4Runner, YET. I have a 2008 2 door Rubicon. I love it!! But... I am a single dad with two rapidly growing boys. So, the Jeep has to go... The only vehicle that excites me is the 4Runner!

I joined this forum to learn more about these 4Runners. I drove a 2016 Trail Premium last weekend and fell in love!! I know it'll be way better on road. I don't see myself wheeling it as aggressively as the Rubicon, but who knows... Maybe I will.

I started my car search with Wranglers and then I saw I very nice BMW X5 in my price range. I was hooked until I realized how much maintenance was required. Then I stumbled upon this place and am pretty dead set on a Toyota

My friend bought a new Grand Cherokee in 1998.
I bought a new 4Runner SR5 in 1998.
They were about the same price ($33k). My friend would never shut up about how much more advanced his car was than mine. I wasted my money, he claimed.

My brother is still driving my 4Runner, now with 250k miles. Only major break is a new alternator last year. It's been in 5 accidents, had the axle snapped, and the front right shock bent. Still runs great. I tried to buy it back from my brother this summer but he won't give it up.

My friend's Jeep stopped running in 2007. He scrapped it bought a new one. That Grand Cherokee was a POS and he got rid of it almost three years ago. He bought a used 4Runner for 12k, and is much happier.

I was car shopping for about a year until I finally pulled the trigger on something.
Having worked on cars for a while I went car shopping with 2 main goals, reliability and resale value.
My first choice was a Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon. But I heard a few negatives about it from a buddy of mine that is a senior tech at Chrysler.
I then moved on to the next best thing, German. I was looking at diesels BMW X5's and diesel Tiguans but quickly changed my mind when a 2010 diesel X5 came into the shop with a ton of electrical problems.
That narrowed my search to Japanese manufacturers, after all, they're known for reliability and good build quality, at least in my experience.
To make a long story short after my year long search, countless conversations with techs at dealerships and countless test drives of just about every SUV not he market I settled for a 4Runner.

Compared to the Jeep Rubicon it is a MUCH more comfortable ride. And with a locking rear diff, crawl control, and terrain select is is pretty damn capable off-road also. Not to mention the fact that fully equipped they are about the same price. And lets face it, the 4Runner is a much better looking truck and as I stated before, much more comfortable.
My only regret is that I waited so long to find that the 4Runner is arguably the best looking and most capable SUV on the market.

Had a buddy who swore up and down about Wranglers...he's been a huge Jeep fan since he was a kid. He traded in his Wrangler Unlimited this past summer for a Tundra due to a gas leak problem that Jeep blamed on octane gas. Now he swears on Toyota. I've been a 4Runner fan since I was a kid now I own two. my '01 is my DD while the wife drives the '08 in the winter. Neither one has ever been stuck in mud, snow, and pulled plenty of vehicles out of situations. I think Wranglers are great rigs but I think you need to do a lot to make them look great. I do wish Toyota would do a special edition where for 1 year there is a removable top. Just one year as a limited series...a pipe dream.

As it has been said, it depends on the jeep...but it seems like they all, eventually, come up with some sort of serious issue...

and just when you think they have got it all right...BOOM

Fiat Chrysler Recalls Jeeps

these continued problems are reason enough for me...to NOT get involved with a company that cannot seem to get their products right. even their best vehicle, per our standards, the Wrangler line, have several smaller issues that, IF you choose to buy the vehicle, are told by their lovers to be prepaired, 'Its a JEEP thing'...ya know...

Posed same question to jeep mechanic

I have a company Jeep, when I took my 2016 Jeep into dealer for new rear wheel bearings (61,000) I asked the mechanic if I should buy a good used jeep or 4runner, he laughed and said you spend a week with me you'll run to the nearest Toyota dealer and ask for forgiveness for even asking that question.

To compare apples with apples,
4Runner vs Cherokee, Grand Cherokee. No Brainer 4Runner.
Too many quality issues with Chrysler products.

Apples to Oranges
4Runner vs Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon
Runner is still way more versatile, more room, comfort.
Rubicon lose the versatility, but the look is good with top off, Bimini top,
The mods for the X are whatever you want.

4Runner is like the woman you could stay married too for a long time.
Jeeps like a trophy wife, fun while the good times last, you know it's not going to last.

Couldn't say it any better myself. Had a chance to test drive both 2015 GC Limited and a 2016 JKU Sport. The GC had the best interior and the JKU would be the most fun. Fiat has plagued Jeep with reliability issues. At the end of the day, the 4Runner is the ultimate swiss knife for me and my lifestyle. I have no regrets at all.
