I try to follow Jim Morrison's advice in Roadhouse Blues (one of the greats).

'Keep your eyes on the road
Your hands upon the wheel.'

That's hands, not hand.

Try not to do this too often though.

'I woke up this morning
And I got myself a beer.'

On quite a lot of the time. Despite being a 2003 with no sort of manual auto, I like to manually shift into other gears, particularly for downhill grades to help lengthen the life of my brakes.

Respectfully, the poll becomes more interesting when we talk about automatic vs. manual transmissions. Resting your hand on the shifter of a manual transmission is a big "No-No". Automatic...no worries.

I prefer my hand resting habits to allow me good manual shifting technique.

Even though I have an auto 4th gen, I've been driving a manual car as my DD for years. So it's a force of habit to keep my hand on the shift knob.

No sure if true but I read somewhere that resting your hand on AT transmission is not good for the car, so I try to avoid it.
