V6 4WD.

I don't recall seeing any 2WD on the dealer lots. My zip for toyota.com only shows 2WD V6 for the SR-5 trim, everything else is 4WD. I got 4WD for snowboarding and eventually off-roading, unless I get a quad first.

Just to put my 2 cents in. Here in my neck of the woods, BC Canada, I have never seen a 4X2. It's not even an option in the brochure.

When I lived in Michigan you would very rarely see 2wd SUVs or Trucks on the lots and the only ones on the roads had out of state plates; FL, TX, NC, SC, GA ect.....

Here in North Carolina I see about a 50/50 mix on the lots and on the roads. The west part of the state we have mountains and have poor weather in the winter and of course the coast to the east and people like to drive on the beaches which requires 4WD.

I only got 2WD because it was all I could afford at the time. Now that my wife has graduated from college and working we hope to trade in our 05 Camry in the next couple years and get a V-8 4x4 SE. It would be just awful to have two 4Runners in the driveway. There just aren't any other vehicles out there we really want. I would take the new FJ-Cruiser but it is not as family friendly and offers no V-8.

V6 4WD for me. I'm part of the multi-mode "clunk" club.

4Runner 4x4 V8

Hi, I'm new to this forum and have a year-old 2005 Sport Edition 4x4 V8 that I purchased from a dealer in Winnipeg. I live about an hour outside of Winnipeg in a rural area and having a 4x4 can mean the difference between life or death in the winter when it's below zero and you are driving in a snowstorm under almost white-out conditions. Plus, we have a long driveway that gets bad snowdrifts when it is windy and my 4Runner never has a problem breaking through them.

My husband and I test drove a V6 and a V8 and we both thought the V8 was smoother and (of course) had lots more power. We also wanted the capability to tow a Gator or ATV vehicle w/out running out of power.

In Manitoba they seem to have mostly 4x4's-- I don't remember seeing any 4x2's on the lot.
I guess it's what's needed where I live!

Its a huge mix up here in Toronto.
However, I rarely see the 3rd Gen T4R's.

Most Runner owners have either the 1st or 2nd gen.

I agree in TX, I mostly see V6's, but I do see a fair share of V8's, too. I also would say a majority of people get the 2WD.

We probably really don't need 4WD as much of a "necessity" in TX, unless you live in the Hill Country or West Texas.

I think the reason that most of the people here have V8 4WD is that the type of person that will look for a forum for their vehicle is usually an "enthusiast" and enthusiasts often like to buy the biggest and baddest possible. There are certainly some enthusiasts here that have 2WD V6's, but there are also a lot of people who drive those just as a commuter and don't have a "passion" for 4Runners, it's just another car to them.

Personally, I probably don't need 4WD or V8, but I wanted both of them and the incremental price and the incremental mileage hit seemed trivial compared to the gains in HP and capability. That's why I went that route.

I debadged and don't remember if there was a 4WD emblem but if there was it was small and only on the sides.

Your right about the location of the emblem. it is on the drive and passenger doors behind the SR5, Sport Edition, or Limited Emblems. You can not tell from the front or the back.

Here in Canada dealers are not selling 2WD at all. May be you can get it as a Special Order. I never asked for it. I think SUV should be 4WD and MUST see mud. That's what they designed for. Canadian versions doesn't have 4WD sticker on the door, because they all 4WD, so there is no need to put one there. V6 vs. V8, I'd say it's 50/50, but due to high gas prices (~25% higher then in US) V6 is becoming more popular. It looks like resale value for V8 is going down quicker then for V6. I was in my dealership a week ago and they had 3 V8 and non V6 on the lot (used). Month ago I personally saw 2003 V6 Sport Edition which was $3'000 more then 2003 V8 Limited and I was told that this was happening for couple last month. The demand for used V6 10x higher then for V8, so the prices for V6 gone up or for V8 gone down.

Locally, I think we see quite a bit more of the V8's. Not too many V6's around here, especially on the Limited's. I have yet to see a used V6 priced higher than a V8, but I guess that would be market dependent. In Alberta, we don't care about gas prices so much so we feel obligated to drive V8's

I just got my o6 V6 Ltd last week. I couldn't realy tell much difference btn the 2 engines. With gas prices as they are it was a no brainer. The choice of driving mode was also a consideration for me.
