unfortunatly I got a 2wd because not many used 4runners were 2wd and the ones that were 4wd had too many miles on them.

trust me im gonna find a way to make this thing go off roading just minimal and not deep mud but its gonna see some mud.

V8

I wonder what kind of numbers the new Tundra V8 5.7 has and if it will ever go in the 4runner. You can never have to much power.

Mine doesn't say 4x4 or V6 anywhere, only way you can tell is the fact that its a fair amount taller, or if you look in the cab you see 2 sticks instead of one. Have had my runner about a month and a half now, can't get enough of it. Had to drive 4 hours to houston to find the 4X4 V6 5SPD combination. i think it was worth it.

In my area (northern Virginia, just outside of DC) I don't recall ever seeing a 2WD 4Runner. When I bought mine, every one on the lot, at every dealership, was 4WD. I'm sure there must be some 2WD's in the area, but I've never seen them.

On the other hand, most of the 4Runners around here appear to be 6 cylinders. Based on my very unscientific rear window survey of V8 emblems in the grills of the trucks behind me.

Most people in my area tend to have more money than brains and go 90 miles an hour on the highway so lots of V8s and 4wd. Mine of course is a 4wd 4cylinder just because of it`s age. It has a top speed of 68-69 miles per hour with the ac on. I stay off the highway.

im not real interested in a manual truck but i just now got a 99 z3 m roadster with the s52 engine about 260rwhp and love it. rather have a auto for a daily driver and a manual for the fun. my 4runner is fun though while on the trails

I am a proud new 4runner owner. Before I ended up with the V8 4WD, I had a very difficult time comparing the V6 & V8 and 2WD & 4WD (primary due to gasoline prices so high and there is no mass transit in California).

I did a lot of paper research between the V6 & the V8. But what made up my mind was the test drive at the dealer. I test drove all 4 combinations (2WD, 4WD, V6 adn V8). I even tested the SRS against Sports Edition against Limited.

V8 won me over right away. Yes, the V6 has a lot of power too. But the quiteness and smoothness of the V8 is addictive.

only about 1600 rpm at 55 mph.

V8 rules.

2wd v6 this time. no need of 4wd or v8. Main cause for ownership of the 4runner, to have a SUV with better mpg than the GX.

If i need V8 (out of town trips), the GX. If i need offroad 4wd, the GX.

Here in Atlanta if you look on-line at a dealers inventory, it is about 80% 2WD, 20% 4WD.

My dealer ( Jack Safro Toyota ) has all 4wd's , I've never seen a 2wd there. The powerplant vary , I'll go there and they'll have alot of V8's and then the next shipment come's in and it's alot of V6's. It seem's to rotate back and forth.

The salesmgr. ( who i got to be decent friend's with ) told me that they both sell pretty equal since milage is so close .

V6 4WD and V8 4WD are the only options available through Military Tax Free Sales. I was encouraged not to get the V8 unless I was going to pulling a boat or something. The gas mileage must be horrible. I got the V6 as suggested and I am not complaining. It doesn't get up and go as I have come to expect in my other ride but it can handle the 100+mph required for the autobahn/autostrade just fine.

4runners way up North

I've never even considered that there were 2x4 4runners. Shows how much I know.

We get snow here from November to April, and lots of it. It's pretty hard to control any rear wheel drive vehicle in the snow unless you're really good at drifting. You could say that it's possible to drift into a drift if you're not carefull. Think snowdrift.

There's a certain small town called Goulais (sounds like Goo Lee) and all the Gouligans drive rusted out, jacked up, 1st gen 4runners and toyota trucks. The solid front axle is the only way to go for them.

Well there's my report from up in Canada.
