4th Gen Running Boards

Do you like the 4Runner with or without running boards?

Some pictures here have started me thinking about taking mine off. What's your opinion?

You mean aesthetic appearance? I don't care a lot about that. I have thought about removing them for better ground clearance and would except that I do use them for getting to my roof rack. I imagine that I will eventually remove them and replace them with sliders but not because of aesthetic considerations.

I still have mine, but they come off as soon as I can convince my wife that she can easily use the sliders to get in.

Good Times - Have those custome sliders you have on your rig become production yet? I'd love to replace mine with the ones you have on your rig...

The sliders I have are already ready for production (just awaiting orders) but I'm not sure whether Demello Offroad has made any sliders for XREAS version.

Since mine didn't come with them it was easier to make the mounting tabs to weld. But since the xreas version has tubes running on the outside of the frame the location of the tabs will have to be modified accordingly.

I'd give Demello Offroad (jason@demello-offroad) an email and ask to see what he can do for you.

Good luck and once you get you'll love em to death!

If you drive a lot on gravel roads/highways, and you don't have running boards, you will beat the sh__ out of the lower door panels.

Just a caution flag to those who are considering removing their running boards. It may look better to you without them, but after a while the chipped paint looks worse than the running boards.

I removed my running boards but put them back on after I was in the mud without them. Kind of like what was mentioned above about rocks, the mud will also get inside the door panel a lot more without them. Plus they give you a place to wipe the mud off your boots and a step to the cargo basket.
It looked better without them, but the function of them out-weighs the better looks.

My 4th gen definitely looks less "tame" without running boards, but I swapped the stock SR5 boards for the tube sport edition ones, which has been a good compromise.
