I knew you had a nice setup when I saw your recent photos. Did you use the 50mm for those pics? The bokeh is really nice btw.

I've been really into video since high school and for that i shoot with my Canon GL2. But I recently bought a Nikon D5000 and so far i love it. I'm just getting into the whole SLR thing. I only got the one 18-55mm lens that it came with. I'm looking into getting a lens for some action sports photos. I'm thinking a 70-200mm... thoughts?
Here's a couple pics that I've taken that i like.
And the GL2:

Actually those were quickies on the 28-70 f2.8
I just sent my 14-24mm f2.8 to my bro in NY for work purposes. I'm already lonely. That is the coolest lens I've ever used.

Those are some pretty awesome shots. I keep going back and forth between the 14-24 and the 16-35. Shots like these make me really think things through, but I still feel like the ability to use filters is more important than an extra 2mm wider. The 16-35 is just as sharp, and even sharper in some areas. Either way you can't go wrong!

Yeah, both have their pros and cons for sure. I tell you what though. I shoot 99% of the time on that lens at 14mm. I can't think of the last time I zoomed in with it. Seems almost counterproductive.
The big glass on the front though is a con. It does suck that you can't use a filter and I'm constantly worried that I'm going to scratch it. It's also a huge and heavy lens which when combined with the D700 and a battery grip, makes it pretty cumbersome to use.
I think what really sold me was the ability to shoot at 14mm, the fact that I think it's sharper than the fixed 14mm with the ability to zoom to 24mm and the ability to shoot at f2.8.
In the end though you're right. You really can't go wrong with either one! Or better yet. Have both!

What type of sports? And how close to the action can you get? Keep in mind that a good 70-200mm for sports is going to be a fixed f2.8 which is going to be both BIG and pricey.

How often do you wish you had the ability to use a polarizer or GND with it? Ever?

Hardly if ever. The only reason I wish I could put a filter on it is to protect the glass. The cover for it is basically a rubber cap and it's constantly coming off.
But I don't shoot much landscape and the times I would have used a GND, I just shot in RAW and tweaked it in photoshop.
Is there a rental shop in your area? What I did was I rented the 14-24mm, the 17-35mm, the 16-35mm and the 20mm for a weekend. I think it cost me around $100 to play around with all of those lenses for three full days (the weekend counted as a single day rental) and I could use the cost of a single day rental towards the cost of the lens.

Yes, there is. However I tend to buy my gear online to save a few hundred dollars so I rarely ever do that. I generally just try it out at the store for a bit.
You've given me much to think about. I may lean more towards the 14-24 since I shoot in RAW 100% of the time.

What do you think you would use it for the most? If it's landscape, then the 16-35mm might be a better choice. It is slightly sharper, has the ability to use filters and is smaller and lighter. But if you want to shoot fast, have better bokeh or better low light ability, then I'd go the 14-24mm.

Low light ability is almost identical between the two. Though bokeh is slightly better on the 14-24 due to the 2.8, the VR on the 16-35 makes it equivalent to a 2.8 for low light situations.
I use my wide angle mostly for landscape and it's my go-to lens for off-roading. However, I shoot without a filter most of the time. If I were to get the 16-35, the filter on it 90% of the time would be a Nikon clear NC filter like I keep on my 24-70.
Wide angle is my most common shooting style. I rarely use my 24-70.
