Bought a new 2008 Sport V8 2WD, leather, JBL,full carpet mat set, SS door sills, wheel lock set, NO moonroof, NO spoiler............EXACTLY the way I wanted it(long story).
It's a sweet truck.

I don't own a 4runner but intend to buy one someday.
Here are my observations on trim levels.
SR5
Pros:
- 16 inch wheels. Better than 17 and 18 because when driving on punishing road with lots of holes
greater profile tires put less job on the suspension parts, therefore suspension lasts longer.
- Base price
Cons:
No heated mirrors.
Optional audio controls on the steering
No telescopic steering
Side steps instead of tubes.
Sport:
This trim is closest to me except I wish it had 16 inch tires and while I like hood scoop I'm not sure if it limits the visibility and also I wonder if it's glued to the hood or there is some chance that water will get into the engine area.
Limited:
Pricey, has leather seats which are not practical for the countryside.
all trims also lack the possibility (without adding options) to plug external usb device to the mp3 player and have bluetooth phone integration to the audio system.
I really liked trail edition package but it lacks fog lights that is unacceptable. I would bear no heated mirrors but fog lights are essential.
I dont want Urban runner package because it's also unpractical as limited.

leather seats is the biggest turn-off for me, growing up in southern cal, i must say i HATE them. too damn hot to sit on during the summer. i used to own a nissan maxima with leather seats when i worked about 6 month in kansas in the summer about 10 years ago. the soggy weather makes the leather kinda sticky, ekkkk... sold it right before i left the job.

I bought the SR5 because I payed $13,500 for an 05 (about a year ago) with 35,000 miles and it was the cleanest used car I had ever seen. No previous accidents/body work or anything. I couldn't believe that was all they were asking for. Great deal for me I think.

Titanium 09 Trail Edition (SR5-upgrade), only one available when I had the money to buy, so it's mine.
Really like the T4R, been wanting one for years.

Yes, it came with fog lights. Apparently, the 08 model as introduced did not have fogs, even as an option, but the 09 as delivered had them as standard.

I asked because 4runner trail edition invalidates fog lights.

I believe that was true when the Trail Edition was first announced, but mine has fogs and I did not pay extra. the current catalog shows fogs and lists them as standard equipment.

If you go to http://www.toyota.com/4runner/features.html
and add SR5 4x4 4wd there is a little blue asterisk next to "Integrated front fog lamps and multi-reflector taillamps" label.
When you click on it it says:
Not available with Trail Edition Package.

Maybe so, but the newest 4Runner catalogue that I have shows the fog lights, without an asterisk, and mine came with factory installed fog lights and controls, and I did not pay extra, nor were they listed as an option. I guess Toyota, in their own infinite wisdom chose to include them after the initial release. Maybe its a west coast offering.
I don't know what to say beyond this. My Trail Edition has fog lights! They are hard to see on the avatar, but they are there.
Bill
added: I note on my toyota.com build your toyota website, that they no longer list the Trail Edition in the options list. and, the color choices for SR5 only includes white and gray. Toyota is winding down the model year.
