I specifically wanted 2wd for mechanical simplicity as I plan to own my 4runner for a long time and for a lot of miles. I don't go off road except for some camping and I wanted the 4runner size for towing capacity.
After 54000 miles and in my third Mich winter I have no regrets. Have there been situations that 4wd drive might have helped? Perhaps, but I have learned to get along with 2wd over the years. Is it worth it to me to carry 4w drivetrain complexity around for the 99.9% other times? No.
I know that my needs are certainly not mainstream.

4WD, so I don't need to get out in the cold to install chains when I go snowboarding. One of the big reasons why I bought this vehicle.

That's actually the EXACT same reason why I bought a 4runner and got it in 4X4

Ive always had 4x4. its worth the extra money IMO, you could always scrap the leather and equal out the price.

It is then what we call a "Garage Queen" or it's owned by a Soccer Mom meant for city driving. Things like getting groceries.

Which part? The fact that a 4runner is used like a car, by people who want a bigger vehicle and want something sexier than a minivan? Haha.
It makes me sad because I feel sorry for the 4runner.

Oh, the 4runner. Its seeing all that potential in a vehicle being thrown out the window.

Never! There will always be people like us to keep it around. But Put a 2WD V6 4runner with no mods in front of a mom, and to them, it looks like a fancy mini-van. I just shake my head at the soccer moms that pull up next to me in full stock runners.

I too am saddened when I see the "2Runners" and it makes me think of the "grocery bag hooks" in the back...... what do you guys use those hooks for, if at all???

yeah, I thought they were tie downs untill I was thumbing through the user's manual one night. It made me laugh =)...... and then I cried when I realized that they would actually be used for groceries more often than not when the truck became a soccer mom's ride =(
