I was looking for a 4WD for a long time and trying to decide between a hilux or land cruiser. A 1985 SR5 4Runner came up and I got it within a few days and itís been the perfect car with everything I wanted from the hilux and landcruuser/wagon style 4wd. Parents paid for it upfront though Iím now paying it off over the next year

Lots of hard work! However, money is always well spent when it's Toyota!

I needed a 3rd vehicle that:
4wd
Tow a pontoon
Carry at least 4 people comfortably
Under $20k
Reliable

It was between a GM or Toyota
I like most GM stuff but don't trust the electronics at that age and price point. I say this as I own a 98 GMC truck with 202k miles.

Hi everyone! I’m new here, I mean it is my first post but, on that forum, I am already a few years.
First of all, how I fell in love into the Toyota trucks and SUVs – used to work around 7 years in Yemen; it is a “special” country with different road and climate conditions, mostly desert, mountains, raphe roads and off roads. Most of Yemenis use Toyotas – different kinds and years. The best cars there is Toyota Land Cruisers and Hilux. O my God!!! I was shocked, impressed by the reliability of these cars and how they treat them! Nobody knows there about “special” suspensions, lift kits and other things what you are discussing here. They just use these cars. That is it!
When I’m watching “test drives”, “off-road expeditions on YouTube – people played with big expensive toys. In Yemen, they use them as war machines, working cars. They treat it differently. Over there I had seen Land Cruiser pick up truck driving more than 70-75 mph on the surface – desert covered by cracked old lava and stones (sorry, didn’t have opportunity to make a video at that moment). It was something!!! Unbelievable!
4runner SR5 2007, 134k miles I bought on auction after an accident. When I've been checking a car in a yard, I couldn’t believe the car was written off! One thing what I didn’t like – the car was very dirty inside. The previous owner used to be a dog owner (I like dogs – I grow up with German Shepard but here...).
No oil leaking, no rust, the engine starts as a baby at -30C and car was seating on a yard a few months! When I checked the oil – it looked like just changed, on a battery was sticker dated just before the accident. Later, when I did a car proof report (yes, I decided to do that a few months later…) I figured out that car was sold at Florida US, driven 14 thousand miles in 6 months and sold to Canadian owner from Saskatchewan, who used to be just one owner all these years. Regular car service had done at Toyota/Lexus dealership every 6-10k miles. Later I called them as a new owner, they released to me all car’s history and service history. Just regular maintenance as scheduled from the factory. It looks better and better!
But to my story – I paid cash and drive the car home – 350-400 km, February 2018, Canada, at a snowstorm. Then more I drove then more I love this car! Engine, transmission, suspension – no complaints! Even more! On my way home I had pulled out of ditch from deep snow Ford E-series (technical car).
Easy! My 4runner behaved like a tank!
On the very beginning, I was planning just to straighten and unbend damaged quarter panel and liftgate. But later I decided to do everything in a proper way (even it expected to be more expensive and it was). I found online a donor car and removed excellent quarter panel, ordered liftgate. The job was done in professional Bodyshop and as a result, I had a good car. As I disassembled and put back everything by myself – ascertained that car, body – in excellent condition. Also, I precisely detailed the car inside, changed all filters, removed carbon filter (it is giving me minus 200-300 rpm or even more!). Windshield decided to replace because it had some cracks, chips and it was a good cheap opportunity to has installed new and professionally.
When I had worked on a car – all time used to look for advice and information here on a forum, also tried on other resources (nothing better than here!).
Thank all of you! Honestly – you are the best! Especially want to mention a really friendly atmosphere and desire to help each other here!!!
As you can see – English not my own language, I’m studying it and all time trying to improve and as one of the chances for practice, I decided to write up these post – to share mine experience and in that way thank you!
P.S. Will appreciate any critical comments, especially about my English.
P.P.S. trying to attach photos - something wrong... sorry!
