I was looking for a 4WD for a long time and trying to decide between a hilux or land cruiser. A 1985 SR5 4Runner came up and I got it within a few days and it’s been the perfect car with everything I wanted from the hilux and landcruuser/wagon style 4wd. Parents paid for it upfront though I’m now paying it off over the next year
I needed a 3rd vehicle that:
4wd
Tow a pontoon
Carry at least 4 people comfortably
Under $20k
Reliable
It was between a GM or Toyota
I like most GM stuff but don't trust the electronics at that age and price point. I say this as I own a 98 GMC truck with 202k miles.
My fiance and I were going to get married and buy a house.
Then she left me...
So I bought a brand spanking new rig.
Best thing that ever happened to me!

I picked up a 2002 4Runner Limited with 137k miles last year for $7,675. Paid cash, and first time I ever got the pink slip to a vehicle... Everything was ALWAYS financed, so it's a MUCH more gratifying feeling.
However I've dropped quite a pretty penny on the car with maintenance and updating things (such as replacing broken stereo, speakers, light bulbs, etc). Total I've spent $4k on maintenance and repairs and another $5k on modest upgrages (such as tires, speakers, headlights, window tint... Nothing crazy like suspension or mods. Just cleaning it up)

I got hit by a truck, got paid out, bought a 2nd gen with the initial insurance money, then realized the engine was low compression on 3 cylinders and almost none on one of them, so I decided to sell it despite the clean body. Made a bet that I'd make back what I paid for it, won the bet and split the price of the new truck 50/50 with my moms bf. 5k "2500 each, for a 96 4wd with shit paint, good interior, good under the hood, with car fax and a long list of service records dating to the original owner. spent the better part of a year making it perfect and prepping for paint, now the red sunfaded truck that I bought is in surfside green mica and at this point I've essentially had 2 4runners and one had a sex change.
