Mountain Camping Recommendations

Looking for a recommendation for car camping in NC/SC mountains. Would love to find a campsite on a stream! I know there are options off of forest service roads, but looking for a place to take the family that has bathrooms.

Will certainly share the wealth if I find some good spots! Thanks!

Creekside Mountain Camping

I stopped here for a quick tent-camp night a couple years ago when I was hiking in the area and found it to be friendly and reasonably priced with clean bathrooms. I really dig the Bat Cave, NC area as well, fun backroads to drive on and excellent hiking; great for family activities too.

Thanks for the lead - will check it out. Having a pool is a bonus!

Keep them coming!

Stone Mountian

It's a State Park very clean site, clean rest and shower room. There is a stream that runs in the center of the campsite. Fire rings and both tent and camper sites. Than theirs Scott Kerr lake west of North Wilkesboro NC this is a Federal campground nice lake for swimming.

Hi all,

(Edit: new owner of a 2018 4Runner OR Premium as of a month ago)
I was trying to post a new thread, but it says I don’t have enough posts, to start a new thread. Don’t really get that logic, but anyway this was the most recent thread that was relevant. So thought I’d post here.

I will respond to the OPs question, then one I have. Appreciate any feedback.

OP: so far, my absolute favorite car camping campground is Black Mountain Campground. It’s on the South Toe river at the base of mount Mitchell. A lot of people like Carolina Hemlocks which is about 5 miles down the road, but in my opinion, BM is heads and shoulders above. Carolina Hemlocks is probably best if tubing is your number one priority but to me the campsites are too close together and it looked kinda “junky” to me. It’s probably better in the fall.

My daughter and myself went with intentions of going to Hemlocks , but it was full, so we went to Black Mountain. It was great. Very clean, wide open, clean facilities, great camp store. Not all sites are on the river, but you can hear the water from a long way off. There are great swim holes for the kids within walking distance. I’m a fly fisher, and caught a rainbow literally in a hole kids had been swimming in...
The negative : the FS road from the campground up is closed. Was totally bummed when I saw that. I’d driven up a few years prior to fish. Now it’s closed.

My question: is there a list of good NC forest roads that are open? I was in the Brevard area this weekend, and really enjoyed a lot of the gravel in the area.
Thought it would be cool if there was a comprehensive list of current open FS roads.
I found a cool camping spot this weekend. Holy $@#& seemed like every spot in a 100 miles was taken. This one had 2 cars when I first drove by, but they had left when I came back down.

Ed: sorry, couldn’t post a pic

This is an old thread but I have spent a lot of time at Standing Indian campground which is right on the Nantahala River. The sites on the river get taken quickly but they are all close. There are tons of forest service roads in the area and most are open until winter arrives. The fishing on the Nantahala is also good. I fly fish as well. Black Mountain is nice but not as remote and does not have the forest road access like Standing Indian and the surrounding area.

Good luck!
