How and where to mount my Sirius Sportster Replay?
 

My wife bought me a Sirius Sportster Replay satellite radio, and I am trying to figure out where the best place to mount it is.

I have a 2004 Limited V8. I will have it professionally installed, but I am wondering where and how the best mounting would be. Unfortunately these installation guys don't necessarily have vehicle specific experience, so they have to think it up in an ad hoc fashion.

The unit comes with a suction cup mount, and so that allows for windshield mounting. I don't know if that's ideal. Perhaps, but even so, if window mounted, should it be high or low?

I have also seen (on a non-4Runner) a gooseneck mount to the right of the dash. I don't know how well this works on a 4th gen 4Runner, but if someone has had success with this, I'd like to know.

I have also seen (also on a non-4Runner) a bracket that fits right into the dash to the right of the regular radio.

Has anyone with a 4th Gen had this installed, and can anyone recommend (preferrably with photos) the best way to mount such a thing in a 4th Gen?

check out panavise in dash mounts. I know they make them for 4runners. Here's a link to the site Panavise

I'm not really sure which one you're looking for, but they have several. It's essentially creating a bracket right near the Heat/AC controls. Good Luck.

FWIW, I installed mine in my cupholder of my old Acura. I am currently trying to find a method of installing it in my 4runner as well. My acura had 3 cupholders for the front seats, so I could give one up. With the 4runner only having 2, I'm looking at the Panavise mounts as well.

I actually installed my Sirius Starmate Replay this past Friday. I didn't want anybody ripping apart my truck so I just did it myself. Since I don't eat or drink in my truck, I used the suction cup mount and stuck it in the driver side cupholder. I then extended the arm on the cupholder to give it even more support. Have yet to do it. Howard has only 8 more days! It's a must do by Jan 6th. What would I do with out Stern in the morning. I have listened to him since 1988 back in Philly when was bashing the zoo keeper on WMMR.

I placed mine in the useless compartment under the a/c controls. Just made a cutout in the facia of the lid. Bolted it thru so it's pretty secure. Angled it upwards to see a little better. I think it looks well integrated. I'm not too found of stuff sticking out everywhere. If you search you should find a picture of my instal somewhere. I haven't access to my home computer with my pics at the moment so can't post any right now.

How has the suction cup been doing? I should have mine sportster replay monday, so install next week sometime. I like the bracketron bracket, but thought if the suction cup was doing fine I will just use that?

I got a fm modulator for direct into the antenna on the back of the radio, so we will see what and if that is a real pain to get to?

I use the same spot for the suction cup of my Sirius JVC car kit. Works great. Easy on, easy off. I stow everything in the armrest compartment when not in use. I've no doubt it would be stolen, otherwise (in Chicago anyway).

I have tried using the same spot as holzapfel for the suction mount for my Garmin Quest GPS. Unfortunately, it would stick for a while and then fall off (usually, it would fall off in the garage overnight). I wonder if there is a slight bit of a convex curve to the Runner's silver trim there? Anyone else have troubles with a suction mount here?

Mine as only fallen off once, that was he first night it got really cold. I put it back up and it has stayed since. It works fine there.

Sportster install
 

Hard wired mine. Not to fond of exposed wires. I'm not confident this is the best place to put the Sportster. 6 foot plus friends often hit their knee on it. Quite embarrassed at how dirty she is. My friend unfortunately spilled a road sody on passenger door panel and speaker cover. I have no patience for q-tip cleaning.
