Ever heard of straight pipes destroying a 2nd gen v6 engine?

I was talking to an ASE mechanic, just shooting the breeze. She told me that putting straight pipes in a v6 4runner could cause engine failure. Something about the recirculated exhaust being the wrong temp, and breaking off the valves.

I ask because I sold my 95 v6 to my brother. He had his cat ripped off and put straight pipes on. About a year and a half later the engine failed.

Guy who put the pipes on, his dad ran an exhaust shop. Kid was an "expert".

The ASE mech said it was a known issue with runners.

What is the story? It was pure coincidence we talked about that.

I don't see straight pipes killing an engine. You will likely throw codes if you have an O2 sensor down from where your cat was, and it will sound like crap. I have never heard of exhaust recirculating. :noidea: The exhaust issue with the v6 runners is the crossover pipe right behind the engine. It cooks your headgasket.

The o2 sensor won't tell you anything about the egt (exhaust gas temp). I have also heard that straight pipes can raise your get due to a lack of flow and proper cooling. Do some research about exhaust flow. The theory behind straight pipes is similar to running a 3" exhaust pipe for a vehicle that only needs a 2" pipe. Basically the gases don't escape like they should and tend to circulate inside the pipe and cause excess heat. Straight pipes also hold a lot of heat and that heat goes back to your exhaust sde on the heads. That excess heat can cause premature failure of the valves.

Straight pipes on anything other than a race car is lame too so I just wouldn't do it.
