Welcome to COB's 1989 Toyota Supra Turbo Build Thread. This thread covers all things related to my 1989 Supra since Day 1. It made it back on the road during March of 2016, after 11 years of sitting. Purchased July 7, 2014. My personal vehicles/projects: 99 4Runner - 2wd to 4wd conversion, 5-speed swap, supercharged 87 4Runner - 5-speed swap, CT-26 turbo, rebuilt 22R-TE 94 Supra Turbo - Undergoing restoration, lucky find https://c7.staticflickr.com/9/8119/2...e488c959_b.jpg https://c7.staticflickr.com/9/8844/2...8c4e00a0_b.jpg https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1489/...58aa5479_b.jpg My other projects: 94 Supra Turbo https://c4.staticflickr.com/9/8439/2...61f87bc5_b.jpg 99 4Runner https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7363/...9ea059a7_b.jpg 87 Turbo 4Runner https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5468/...d55d4b07_b.jpg __________________________________________________ __________________________________________________ ____________________________ 2004 - Why I wanted a MKIII Supra... I caught the Supra bug in 2004. This was the first one I'd become accustomed to, a 90 N/A Targa, white package with blue interior. The front of the car was involved in a low speed accident. The cheap body shop installed the wrong year front bumper. It was the first car I ever got to drive. It was bought to be fixed and sold, it was gone before 2005. I missed it dearly. https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3882/...57a1f5cb_b.jpg https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2933/...08cabebf_o.jpg 2014 - Second Chance After building an 87 4Runner with a CT-26 Supra turbo, I figured it was time to go for the whole Supra. 4 Requirements needed to be met - White package Blue interior 1989 + Turbo 89 Supra Turbo - 130,000 miles, original owner, garaged daily. Targa top, white package, blue cloth interior. Blown head gasket is the reason for sale. Other cons include the automatic transmission. https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3871/...79f22cab_b.jpg Vehicle History December 1988 Manufactured and shipped to Lee White Toyota, Lemon Grove, CA. Vehicle is driven by dealership owner as a demo vehicle, accumulating 2,263 miles Owner #1 1989 Original owner purchased the vehicle for $29,000 1993 CT-26 turbo failed and was replaced. 55,000 miles 1995 Owner lends the vehicle to his boss, who downshifted to excessive RPM and sent a rod through the block. 76,000 miles. Taken to a shop for repair. A terribly ATK rebuilt motor was installed and having stalling issues. $3,400 Shop owner, during test drive, rear ends another car, then gets rear ended by another vehicle. Body was then repaired and repainted. 2003 CT-26 turbo failed and is replaced again. 110,000 miles 2005-2014 7M-GTE #2 was suffering badly from a variety of failures. Head gasket badly blown. Chassis mileage 129,890. Owner gets a new job, buys a new car, leaves the Supra sitting with the intention to keep it as a weekend car. Vehicle sat non-operational 2 years outside, 7 in garage. Owner #2 Day 1 July 7, 2014 Picking up the car. https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5500/...ed8ef776_b.jpg https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3909/...98af2bba_b.jpg https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3874/...0cbebda1_b.jpg <iframe src="//www.youtube.com/embed/MlIdsBPtUmo" allowfullscreen="" width="640" height="480" frameborder="0"></iframe> https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3906/...b9b0951e_b.jpg Photos from the seller, who was the original owner's coworker https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5519/...31b48012_b.jpg https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3871/...0df9a2d8_b.jpg https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2898/...7e2aae3b_b.jpg https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2936/...95e5b595_b.jpg https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2902/...cecdc0db_b.jpg https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2936/...09598181_b.jpg |

I've actually been a member of Supraforums since 2007, JamesRR3. RR3 for Jackson Randy Rhoads Flying V, my favorite guitar. The work will begin when I am decided on what I want to do. I'm going to start with changing the fluids and cleaning. https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3852/...598ccfa0_b.jpgFirst day by cobblewagen, on Flickr Quote:

I started the day off by stopping at a local paint store, I had them mix me up some Super White touch up paint. I also bought some SEM Trim Black for later.
Later on, I replaced the completely defunct battery in the car. I had an extra that just happened to be the right size. https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3873/...06f40ae5_b.jpg Note the scratch on the left portion of the front bumper, near the signal lamp. https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2895/...fc210177_b.jpg Touch up paint applied. Trickle charger also hooked up to keep her charged up. https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5490/...2691c0c2_b.jpg Damaged rear bumper https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5542/...5e1d72a9_b.jpg Will buff the rest out later, otherwise it's looking better with some touch up. https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5489/...896e2a36_b.jpg My Toyotas! https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5555/...91feb15a_b.jpg https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3839/...2667fd0b_b.jpg |
Ohhhh baby I'm so excited to see another Supra build!! You're keeping the 7M? My hat goes off to you for not taking the easy way out with a 1J swap.

Ideally I want to build a motor on the side... someday, 2JZ-GTE... A lot of fellas seem to be making 350-400hp on mostly stock internals on a 7M. |
This oughta help me get things rolling... this suckers BIG!
Also got a 1 ton engine stand and 4 jackstands on order... https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3925/...aa38d0c1_b.jpgUntitled by cobblewagen, on Flickr |
sub'd... -- beautiful ride, good pickup!
|
COB, what's your estimate on how much this whole list will cost?

I didn't spend much time researching items that aren't engine related so far. Since this will be a long term build, there is no rush to get to the rest of the car. I also plan to purchase a parts car someday, if possible, for the 5-speed swap. The parting out of that car may net me a few extra bucks, like the 88 donor pickup did for my turbo truck. Hope to keep you entertained! |
Found this sucker in the glovebox. First time I've ever had a factory window sticker for one of my cars.

It hasn't had a top on it since January. Currently rocking my 31"s to keep the miles off the mud tires. Yeah you wish you had a sweet microfiber windshield wiper, too, admit it. https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3835/...2613cd5b_b.jpg by cobblewagen, on Flickr https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3869/...fba45111_b.jpgIMG_8395 by cobblewagen, on Flickr Finally got it registered to my name, let the work (slowly) take place! Learning about the MKIII and 7M as I go. Fortunately Toyotas are very well built and relatively similar. Garage will have some new scenery for a while. https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5567/...0741e0b0_b.jpg by cobblewagen, on Flickr https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2920/...8d2292bd_b.jpgIMG_8336 by cobblewagen, on Flickr Featuring harbor freight moving blankets https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2924/...0c464648_b.jpg by cobblewagen, on Flickr Before picture. https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5574/...33245dd8_b.jpgUntitled by cobblewagen, on Flickr Airbox/intake to turbo. https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3918/...f199e651_b.jpg by cobblewagen, on Flickr Unfortunately, the CT-26 has some shaft play and a chewed up compressor wheel... My trucks did not have such convenience. https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3925/...d6fb7a4f_b.jpg by cobblewagen, on Flickr |
