(1987 4Runner, 22RE) I can't figure out why my ignition buzzer still goes off when the key is removed. Sometimes it even goes off when I bump the steering column when leaning into/getting out of the truck (even the key is removed from the ignition). I couldn't find another thread on this issue, how do I get this to stop? My concern is that the ignition may think it's in the ACC position (even with the key removed) and over an extended time it could discharge the battery.

Any thoughts or suggestions?

best guess would be to change both the ignition tumbler and the switch because both can cause this issue

Probably just wiring short or key-in-ignition sensor/switch

Probably not your ignition switch ACC contact itself.

IF no shorts in wiring, it is most likely just the "key-in-ignition" switch that senses key is inserted in mechanical key core, even if the key has not yet touched the ignition switch itself. Meaning buzzer goes off but acc contacts are really still open = no current draw.

However, if buzzer goes off while un-attended and you have a weak battery, that might be enough to drain your battery.

IF you really think it is the ignition key itself, my brand-new unused Beck Arnley PN 201-1410 ignition switch, still in box one is for sale (here) :)

It's likely it's the switch that senses the key is in the lock portion of the ignition switch assy.
Some WD40 may help. You may have to remove the plastic housing around the steering column to get to it. There's about 6 screws underneath holding the 2 halves together.
If that doesn't do it you can disconnect the switch, the 2 wires for it have their own connector.

These two wires are probably the green ones here:

However, I'm not positive because I could never find those wires in schematic. I see a light reminder relay on page 5 of 1988 4Runner schem but I do not see the buzzer nor key-in-ignition switch.

I think the key is not completely turned off, before you are pulling the key out of the ignition. I have an 87' runner and I can pull the key out of the ignition while it is running.
Does the radio stay on when you pull the key out.
Double check, put the key back in the ignition, press the little black button on top of the steering column and hold down while you turn the key completely to the off position.
Also make sure you're head lights are off.

Nothing stays "on" when the key is removed, but if I hit the steering column or wheel sometimes the buzzer will sound. I'll try some of the above suggestions and see how it works out.

I'm curious to know if you figured out whether those green wires are the buzzer wires, because I'd like to disconnect mine.
Unless there's a good reason to keep it connected…
