2014 paint scratches

magnetic grey metallic paint job on my 4runner sr5.
Anyone having problems with this paint job? Seems like if i look at to hard,
it gets a scratch.

Never had any serious problems with any of my 4runners before.
I've owned 4runners since 1st gen and i loved all of them.
Will post a pic soon as i get the latest scratches out.

The dealer explained to me that the new eco-friendly water-based paints they use are very thin and not durable, and it isn't. I have a 2015 with scratches already from the simplest of things. I did, however, buy their Simonize package and that covers all panel damage. If they cannot fix the panel, they have to replace it. I am due for first service and they have two doors and the lift-gate to fix, I got door-dinged on both front doors and my 83 year old neighbor, who's yard I take care of in the winter, thought he'd do me a service and clean off my new 4Runner while I snow-blowed his driveway. He ran it right down the top of the rear bumper and dragged it down the paint the whole way. That was a plastic scraper...

Paint - nearly non-existent!

thanks! i'll look into that package......

You're hosed if you live somewhere where they salt and gravel the roads.

My paint looks like ass after two CO winters.

Yeah almost all paint nowadays sucks, although I have to say the paint on my 4Runner is WAY better then on my 2011 Camaro. With that said, darker colors like your grey metallic show scratches and swirl marks more predominantly than lighter colors. Car washes are the number one cause, washing it your self using proper methods helps a lot.

Mine '14 is black and I just have to pretend not to notice all the pinstriping from overgrown trails. Clearly that's all self inflicted, but sometimes unavoidable. It's not so bad when the truck is clean. My only solace is that I don't plan on ever getting rid of it, so the paint is gonna look shitty at some point down the road anyway and I bought the truck to use it.

Yea, I have seen that. Mine is silver, and damn, I agree, if you look at it too hard, it scratches… bummer. And I use mine, just got back from some trips down Maine's logging roads and there are quite a few pock marks.

But also, and maybe this should be a new thread… The Interior!! It is worse!! It takes no abuse whatsoever… Loading the Yeti in through the back door left big gouges in the door handle… The black lining in the cargo area has many marks from camping gear, all that… And I was careful!

Oh well, like 4Rager, I plan to drive it for a long time. My last 4Runner, a 2004, took all sorts of use...and scratches and dings inside were minimal and not nearly as noticeable… Yea the shiny stuff looks cool, but not when it gets all dinged up… Love the vehicle… Hate how cosmetically sensitive it is.

I drive off road and have moved cross country twice by overloading my 4Runner.

I can't attest to how easily it is damaged, but the exterior and interior tend to stand up pretty well to serious abuse.

As above, the real damage was done by salt and grave on Colorado's Beirut roads.

Salt and gravel on the roads seem to be a major factor from what I hear

Wipe the the area with quick detail spray + MF towel.

After, rub your finger over the 'scratch.' If you feel any dept to the scratch then it is threw the clear coat. if it doesn't have any depth you can buff it out with polish, pretty easily too.

Please post a picture too...

i have a 2015 sr5 nautical blue and it crazy how it scratches even after paint protector was installed. I also saw a neighborhood cat that was let outside to roam and it jumped from the fence onto the hood of my truck.... it slid across the hood trying to slow itself down.... paint protector doesn't help stupid pet owners that leave there pets to roam neighborhood.. i can live with the scratches i just tell myself i was driving thru the bush and all is well :-)

Highwaystreets 07-25-2016 12:48 AM

Yah I have a ton of scratches on mine and like the OP said a hard look will scratch this thing! Incredibly bad paint imo.....
