Simple way to haul trash to the dump?
 

When I had my 4th gen, I had a 55 gallon Rubbermaid trash can that I could just throw in the back to haul trash to the dump, but in my 5th gen with 3rd row seating, the can is too tall. I'm brainstorming how I can haul trash to the dump without throwing individual bags back there, while at the same time incorporating some sort of separate compartment system for recyclables that will fit in the cargo area.

Anybody have any ideas or methods that have worked for you?

I've thought about a plastic drawer storage container from Walmart for recyclables, and then just downsizing to a 32 gallon can for general trash. Unfortunately, I'm worried about how sturdy the plastic drawer system will be, plus this would mean more frequent trips to the dump.

1. Buy a plastic trash can and cut it down to the correct height. Use specifically for trash runs in 4Runner.
2. Use a tarp (what I do when hauling crap like that)
3. Get a garbage company to start picking up your trash.

1. Now that's an idea, but then the lid doesn't fit so it makes my garage smell since this also serves as a storage container between garbage trips.
2. That makes it less simple.
3. Call me cheap, but I don't want to spend $300 a year when I am capable of hauling my own garbage 1 mile down the road to the nearest waste center.

what i would do though is buy a cheap trailer, you can probably buy something that works for this for under $250

Buy a hitch mounted cargo tray- you said you're cheap so get one from Harbor Freight...

I second this excellent idea. I have one and it's a godsend--especially with compression straps. It's my bike/trash/firewood/gear hauler.

LOL- I have one I bought "new" at a yardsale for $20.

It looks like it's been through the war now I use it so much...

I bought a 4x6 Utility trailer off craigslist for $250

I would just pay the $300 ...

WM's "Basgster" is a very convenient way to handle larger amounts of debris without hauling anything - they come pick it up for you. You buy the "bag" at Home Depot or Amazon or wherever for like $30 - and then you pay to have WM pick it up up when you are ready.

Very reasonably priced overall compared to a "real" dumpster rental - but mostly convenient as you can buy the bag whenever and schedule the pickup anytime later (weeks or months - however long it takes). I've read some horror stories of delayed pickup dates - but they came and got mine on the first day of the window!

^^ the Bagsters are excellent but just make sure they service your town. I bought one on my way home from work in the next town over, completely (over) filled it and THEN found out WM doesn't pick them up in my town.

Lolz - Yes - That is a prerequisite for sure :) The link in my post has a zip code look-up to confirm BEFORE you buy (and fill up!) the bag. I'm way to anal to do anything of the sort without automatically researching all possible gotcha's that might come up (been burned by my own presumptions way too many times!).

The pick-up fee is not what I'd consider cheap - but again what I really appreciated was the open-ended concept. Buy the 3 cu yd bag for a measly $30 - and schedule pickup whenever your project is done. I used it for a bedroom remodel that included ripping out a mammoth built-in cabinet/counter/bookshelf - it worked perfectly. I also plan on using another one when I get around to cleaning out the garage and 30+ years of cruft :-)
