SCRunner12's 99 Highlander "Humpty Dumpty" Build Thread
Never thought I would be back making another build thread in the 3rd gen section, but here I am. Had bought a 2000 Limited 6 years ago and built it up to pretty much my dream 3rd gen, then sold it...haha I had a blast building my last 4runner, but with my 2nd child on the way, buying a house and my job getting busier, I found myself less and less on the trails and needing something better for my family. So I found a very clean 2006 4wd double cab Tundra and never looked back. Sold my 2000 and have been loving the Tundra so much, but miss wheeling and having a build. Didn't hurt my 6 year old daughter was begging me and my wife for a "truck" to go 4wheeling in, love that kid.
2000 build http://www.toyota-4runner.org/3rd-ge...ld-thread.html http://i780.photobucket.com/albums/y...j.jpg~original 2006 Tundra build https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/....396843/page-2 http://i780.photobucket.com/albums/y...u.jpg~original Last month was my 30th and I knew it was time and an opportunity to finally get my wheeler. I have always wanted a 1st gen 4runner , but they are damn expensive around here and I had a very limited budget. So randomly a local member on TacomaWorld PM's me about a supercharger he wants off a another member's wrecked 3rd gen. I gave him some advice, but he eventually emails me and says the guy doesn't want to deal with insurance and body shop, so he is letting the 4runner go. My gears start turning and askt he seller for pictures of the 4runner and it turns out to be 99 IJM Highlander edition and the damage is very localized and "minor" in my opinion. Best part, the engine and drivetrain are perfect and untouched. Well 20 more texts later, I am committed to a 4runner, my friend gets a supercharger and now have the fun part of letting my wife know... Luckily, I had my 30th birthday the week before and was able to "justify" the purchase without her seeing it. :whoo: Worst case scenario I would flip it or pull the engine and save for a future 1st gen build and part the rest. When I went to see it, the damage was very manageable and it ran great. Brought it home and immediately was told to get it off the street where neighbors can see it and in the garage where it has been since...:bash: These are the pictures I got from the seller, not bad, missing the flares, but all there. http://i780.photobucket.com/albums/y...t.jpg~original http://i780.photobucket.com/albums/y...3.jpg~original How I received it from the PO and body shop (all parts where in the back)... http://i780.photobucket.com/albums/y...p.jpg~original So due to the fact I got it in pieces and have to source parts, I dubbed this build the "Humpty Dumpty" build, but I'm hoping I can put all the pieces back together again... Well the 4runner sat for a long time due to a very rainy 2017 winter and life getting in the way. I also was being super cheap about replacement parts and trying to avoid paying for paint on the body parts. Ended up finding replacement fender, grill, headlight, rear hatch and front bumper from various sources for $400 total, so happy about that. Also picked up @ rear CBI bumper after he had been in an accident. Took some good loving and lots of beer, but I got it mounted (mounting a bent CBI bumper is not fun by yourself btw). It still was tweeked, so I took it to a local body shop and $45 later it's looking like newish. Picked up a couple different sets of wheels/tires until I finally have settled on my current 17" Tundra's and 34x10.5x17 BFG KO2's. Really like the ride on them and that they are D rated.
After the lift and stock tires/wheels. https://www.flickr.com/photos/141143.../shares/x8Ub8L After that the truck sat again for a while until I sold my Tundra and made the 4runner my daily. Need to some maintenance on it, but for the most part it ride great. More updates to come. |

welcome back!

We knew you'd be back. All the long time members who sell their rigs eventually make their way back into the circle of trust :bigok:
Did you keep the manual hubs off your last runner or pick them up intending to put them on the Tundra (if that's even a compatible swap)? Welcome back! |

I sold the old set I had on my 2000 and found this new set about 3 months ago at a pick n pull. I debated installing on my Tundra as it is possible but passed on that idea since I didn't want to deal with the hassle of swapping the manual hub parts to ADD spindles. As with my 2000 I will ditch the ABS since it's cheaper than repressing everything and I don't want ABS on my trail rig. I will probably wait till I can pick up some UCA's since the upper ball joints are toast on the manual spindles. Probably try the eBay UCA specials since this won't be my DD. |

I had a feeling you bought a new truck since you were buying parts in the classifieds. Good luck with the new build! |
