Dobinsons 5th Gen T4R Suspension options - from Exit Offroad

5 Attachment(s)
Hey guys, my name is Mike Tomczyk (aka Crikeymike), owner at ExitOffroad.com. I've been in the 4x4 industry since 1998 and have always preferred to focus on suspension for 4x4's, since it's something you'll feel every single time you move your vehicle, whether driving to work or home, or offroad for the weekend. Everyone has their own build plans for their vehicle, so no same combo of parts is necessarily right for everyone, which is why we offer such a variety - to get you exactly what you're looking for!!

https://exitoffroad.com/wp-content/u...5134771220.png

I've been blasted with a lot of questions recently about our suspension offerings for the 5th Gen 4Runners, so I figured it's time to make a specific post about all that we offer. We can lift anywhere from 1.0" to 3.0" with coils and struts/shocks, and we can put together a specific package for whatever you want/need, including the added weight you've added to your vehicle.

Public Notice: Stock/New hub to fender measurements average out to 20" front and 22" rear, and all lift heights are based on that. Many people have 1/2" variance based on age and how the truck came off the assembly line. This video here shows you how to measure your baseline and lifted height:
<br>
<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/w7IgfWU1Awo" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe>
<br>
Added Load Weight.
How much extra accessory weight have you added to your truck? Did you add a 150LB front bumper and an 80LB winch? That's constant weight, and will change which coil to buy.
Did you add our drawer system (hopefully) to the back end (150LBS) or a steel bumper with swing out tire carrier (200LBS)? That will also change which coil we would suggest.
You will want to consider that weight before ordering. If you order a heavy load coil without a heavy load, be warned that it won't ride as it's supposed to and the lift height will be incorrect.

Contact me directly if you have KDSS and I can walk you through our options for that. FYI, vehicles with KDSS should add our 15mm spacer (PS59-4025) onto the rear passenger side to correct the lean that usually happens on 1.5" or more of lift in the rear.

Note: Vehicles with KDSS should be lifted no more than 2.5" in the rear or you will probably have a lean that you cannot correct unless you add additional parts like these: Treaty Oak KDSS Spacer Kit

Front Strut Options
GS59-700 - Twin Tube, fixed mount (not adjustable), suits 0-2.5" lift (555mm extended, 432mm compressed), can be used on stock height or lifted vehicle, use with OE or aftermarket coils, coil seat mount same as OE
GS59-574 - Twin Tube, fixed mount (not adjustable), extended travel (22.63" / 575mm extended, 430mm compressed), use with 2" coil to get 3" lift (coil seat height is 13mm higher than OE, resulting in ~1" of lift). Using this with a 3" length coil would give 4", so not recommended. Diff drop kit is required to run these, as CV's will bind at full down travel due to the extended length.

We stock these parts in Miami, but if we were to run out, or have to make a special order, or custom make some coils, they would ship from Queensland, Australia.

What we get the most demand/requests from customers is our 3" front and 2" rear (leveling the vehicle), or 3" front and 3" rear progressive/variable rate coils with long travel struts and shocks. This will give the most travel and flex with just a few extra components needed. We also have options for 3/3", 2/2", 2/1", 2.5/1.5", or whatever lift height options you want to run. Lately, 2" front and 1" rear is very common (300 and 599 coils).

Added 8/29/17: Here is an album I just created trying to collectively gather all the photos I can of installed Dobinsons products. I'm showing the part numbers used and lift height gained, where possible.

@Dobinsons_Mike Looks awesome! I love the # of choices, especially the fact you offer 1.75" front lift and a sub 2" (1.25")rear lift coil allowing for a mild lift without needing UCA's.

Do you guys do install as well?

Need to talk to my accountant...lol! :gossip:

hahaha, thanks man. Between the Prado 150, FJ Cruiser, and 4Runner, there are lots of coil choices. I even found a coil that would be like 3/4" lift on the front. haha, but who would want that?

No, no installs here sorry. Just an office and a warehouse. We have lots of people we can suggest though around this area if you need.

Added 2/20/18, closest to the top of the thread. Here's the strut assembly sequence, which is a very common question from everyone!!

any chance on the 1.25" rear coil in variable rate?

No sorry, I don't think that would happen unless there was considerable interest. The variable rates have to be designed then made, then tested on the vehicle to determine the where the changes need to be. It's kind of a pain in the neck, and doing the 2 x 3" options we make now took probably 3 runs each to get it right, but now that they are right, it's pretty damn good.

Forgive my ignorance, but I've never heard of these. How do these compare to OME or the 6112/5160 setup (minus resis obviously)?

Thanks

We're new to the USA market, so a lot of people haven't heard of us before. And we don't have a lot of real world comparisons yet to all the options out there. We're always asking those who do buy our suspension to write a true honest review with photos and everything after they get it installed and drive it for a while.

It's all very comparable. The coils are made in Queensland Australia, just like OME coils. Dobinsons shocks are twin tube nitrogen charged gas shocks, built almost the same as OME shocks. We have a few differences though, mainly that we use all rubber bushings for maximum vibration dampening and resistance to noise. Some shocks have built-in (welded) stone shields for forward-facing shocks. Here is the link to all the details of our shocks:

https://www.dobinsonsprings.com/inde...hock-absorbers

And here's the one for our coil building process:

Thank you for the info and the links. Looks like a good option for someone like me who wants much better suspension without having to shell out a lot of money or doing frequent rebuilds.

Few questions if you don't mind:

Do you have links to customer reviews in Australia and USA?

Do the coils come on any other colors? (One color color is truly have a problem with is seafoam green)

How will these hold up to winter in the rust belt states ? (Lots of salt and sand). The OME nitro shocks I have on my Cherokee rusted up badly in two winters.

Thanks,
Jon

Most reviews will be under the Toyota Prado 150 and the Land Cruiser 200 series. Also a lot of 80 series cruiser guys use our stuff, here in the states too. Google dobinsons reviews for those and you should find some fast.

The coils come in 2 colors. Clean aqua/teal, or dirty (you have to offroad it first). Sorry bud. The powder coat quality is very very good, and you could quite easily paint over them before installation to whatever color you want. If enough people were interested, we could get an order powdercoated one of 5 main colors, but it has to be the exact same part number and 10 pairs of each to get it done. That's not easy, considering how big our variety is and that it all happens in Australia. I suggest painting them if desired.

The shocks hold up to Miami rust very well from what I've seen, but I don't have any feedback from the rustbelt and the salted-road states on the East Coast with any good reviews to give you, sorry. I'm well aware of the rust issues on the OME shocks, in as little as 6 months. Our color is the same as OME and Monroe, but I believe our paint is good. I've always recommended to everyone when I sold OME to clear coat the shocks as soon as you pull them out of the box if you live in a rust belt. Any links on who has shocks that can withstand their paint thru that climate?

Haha, fair enough

I suck at math apparently!

How much for a 3" x 3" lift package, including the UCAs?

4 coils x $175 (pair) = $350
2LT front Struts x $145 = $290
2LT rear shocks x $115 = $230
Differential drop = $40

Total Cost 3" LT setup $910 unless you add the adjustable pan hard rod.

All non-LT kits are $790.

I don't believe they sell UCA's so pick your own flavor.

The price on these are very competitive and the reviews I've read so far are almost all positive.
