Falken Wildpeak AT3W: initial impressions
 

Hey everyone, I just wanted to share my initial impressions with my new Falken Wildpeak AT3Ws.

I've been researching what tires to get for nearly a month and I narrowed it down to Firestone ATs, Cooper Discoverer AT3s/ATPs and these. The BFG KO2s are a little more than what I wanted to spend and I heard they lose wet grip traction as they age.

I finally settled on the Firestones because of their good tire wear, good traction in wet roads and the enormous backing from many sites, but my local tire shop had them priced at $740 for the full set OTD. They had a sale on the Falkens and I was able to get all 4 for $600 OTD including mount and balance. I am so happy I did!

Tread pattern: 9/10 these are very aggressive looking tires. Not as aggressive as the KO2s but something I really like. They definitely transformed the look of the 4Runner even with stock sizes.

Road noise: 10/10 the tires are quiet for ATs. I was running standard comfort SUV tires before this and the cabin noise is exactly the same. Something I was shocked about!

MPG: 10/10 so I've had these for 1000 miles and noticed no change at all in my MPG, something I was worried about also since the AT3Ws are pretty heavy.

Handing: 9/10 IMO due to the extra weight of the tires I feel that the 4Runner is more planted and I feel less sway when making turns. I've driven mostly on pavement and these are have done really well. I don't get any bump steer at all, something that I was experiencing with my old tires. I haven't driven with these in rain or snow, but based on other reviews they handle superbly and I'm excited to give them a try out when I move to northern cali later this year. On a back dirt/gravel road near my house they handle like they would in concrete.

All in all extremely happy with these! I'll definitely update as I drive more on them.

Glad to hear your feedback on these. My friend just got a set on his Land Cruiser and loves them. I currently have a set of Toyo Open Country A/Ts and they've been fantastic but I've read so many positive reviews about these Wildpeaks. They're priced lower than the Toyo's so these may be the next set I try out when it comes time to replace.

You can't beat them for the price.

I have them in 265/70/17 P-rated.

Value, ride quality, aesthetic appeal is excellent.

My MPG did drop compared to the Pirelli highway tires that were on their previously. I was getting just over 20mpg highway previously and now it's probably closer to 18mpg.

The only consistent negative feedback I've read about these tires is tread-life. They advertise 55K. But I've hearing guys are only getting about 40-45K out of a set. Which is OK since Falken is good about pro-rating the shortcoming towards the next set.

I got the P rated also. 265/70/16. I love that it has the silica tread compound.

Falken honors the 55K life span?! Oh wow, didn't know that. That's awesome!

I have the Falkens in 265/70/17 on my truck as well. They have been great in the rain as well as the small amount of ice/snow we had over the winter.

Every lifted Tacoma and Tundra at Avondale Toyota in Az had Falken Wildpeak AT3W on them with Raceline Wheels. Was there to get the LLC Red Coolant and Looked around. No BFG KO2's at all

4K miles on mine and still great
 

Love my E rated 285's. Been great in sand, rock and pavement. They are firm but quieter than I expected. They have a 50K warranty. If they last that long, I'll probably get another set.

I love mine (E-285/70) 15k and would still give them 10/10. No visible wear

Inquired about a possible Falken AT3W 275-70-17 Size. No word back

UPDATE: Falken WILL offer the AT3W in 275-70-17 in a D load in the 2nd quarter of 2018. Talked to Falken Tech Support directly. Doubt I can wait that long for New Shoes as my Cooper ATP's have 82k on them.

Did anyone take their P/C tires off roading?

I had the at3w’s installed for about 4hrs, started with a replaced a worn out set of 265/70 Cooper AT3s, had the at3w installed but they felt to soft taking faster corners so I went back and paid the difference for a set of ko2’s no regrets!

Love my Falken Wildpeak in 265/70/17. Got 2 1/2 spacer lifts in the front and 1 1/2 in the back. There was rubbing at front (mostly during reverse) so I had to trim the fender liners.

When my Cooper ATPs expired I switched to the AT3W. Slightly more aggressive tread pattern, great ride quality and road noise level. They get a lot of positive feedback from others. I've only had these for about a month so that's a small sample size for a detailed review.

Been running AT3Ws for nearly 4 months. P265/70/17. I rate them 2.5 out of 5.

Pros - I'm very impressed with the straight line traction in most conditions including offroad (mud, wet grass, gravel and dirt), tho haven't had snow yet. They look cool. Quite in a straight line. Great price.

Cons - They are wearing fast, the outside edges have completely lost their 'sharpness' already. Lateral grip on road is lousy, they drift sideways on corners a lot and I've had to modify my driving style to deal with this, haha. Become noticeably louder on corners.

In comparison to the BFG Rugged Trail LT in E load range I had previously, my average mileage has dropped from 17 to 16.6 mpg even though they are lighter weight. I think the more aggressive tread pattern is the culprit there. Obviously since I went from an LT to a P tire, the ride is now smoother and more comfortable.

I'll wait and see how they perform through a NE winter before I decide if I'd buy them again.

Had my AT3Ws on for about a week now and I love 'em! 255/70-R18 (32") in the SL weight rating. Only thing that was annoying was they took one of those air cannons to seat the bead (I guess because I went 255?) and most of mine (I got 5) took over 3-5 ounces on each side to balance the wheel. That being said they drive super smooth on the highway/city and look great. Will be taking them offroad once I'm done with finals week :)
