Rear wiper blade replacement
 

I tried search but couldn't find anything.

I need to replace the rear wiper on my 2008 T4R. I went to an auto parts store (Autozone maybe?) and it wasn't even in their book, they told me I should buy it from the dealer.

Looking online (like eBay), I don't find anything obvious... can anyone suggest a good brand to find, or even the best website from which to purchase? I see a Hodee brand on eBay, never heard of that brand, is it any good?

Not sure if you are saying you need just the replacement blade...a 12"

Did they have the attachment to keep the arm in position when not in use? If so, which brand did you buy? Thx

I bought a Bosche replacement from Autozone a few weeks ago. It came with all the pieces to make it stow away when off like normal.

I wouldn't necessarily recommend it though. It doesn't touch the window at the very top of it's arc. I kept the factory one, and I'll probably just try to find a blade insert for it for the next go around.

Well, my blade has worn out so bumping this. I can't remember what I did last time, think I was at the dealer anyway for an oil change (they actually have the best price in my area for full synthetic change) and just had them replace it.

What's involved in replacing my blade (note, the other components like the arm and holder wedge at bottom are working just fine)? I can't see how to just click a blade off and on like with the front ones.

I have a 5th gen, so this doesn't answer the OP's question directly. But for what it's worth, since this thread is in general discussions.

I was able to pick up a rear wiper blade assembly (rubber, replaceable part of the arm) from my local Carquest. I forget the brand, this was several years ago. I do remember it was claimed to be an exact fit.

I got home to find that the package came with several adapters, so obviously wasn't exact fit. The directions on the back were vague and none of the adapters looked to fit my wiper arm. My '18's owners manual doesn't outline how to replace the rear wiper. Just a generic "take it to your Toyota dealer" verbiage. My problem is that my Toyota dealer is 135 miles one way, 175 miles away the other and 245 miles away in yet another, and nine hours away in the last direction of the compass.

I tried the adapter and diagram closest to what my arm looked like and followed it's unwritten but illustrated direction on how to disconnect the arm. It was soon obvious following that would break the arm. After spending nearly two hours looking through the encyclopedia size owners manual and attempting to install my wiper, I gave up.

Frustrated, I spent some time searching online if I had the correct wiper and how to replace it. I had the correct wiper. I probably spent another hour watching amateurish videos - you know, those that the You Tube sensation is trying to hold his phone in one hand and trying to manipulate things that require three while dropping their phones, the video quality causing epileptic seizures because it's moving at light speed all over the map, cussing, endless mindless drivel instead of verbal instruction? But I finally stumbled upon a simple, well done video by a Toyota dealership service department on how to replace my wiper blade on my 4Runner. It was only 30 seconds long.

I timed my attempt after watching the video several times. It took me 74 seconds to swap out my wiper blade. I wish I bookmarked that video for future reference.

The wiper is several years old now, but still in good shape because it sits up within the housing hanging over the rear window. But the rear window gets very grimy in wet or winter weather, so the blade takes a beating from grit and grime.

If you haven't purchased one yet, I highly recommend the silicone ones. They last much longer and work way better than the traditional ones.

Wiper blade was replaced but I must have bought it elsewhere. I have the Bosch Icon wipers on my 3 Toyota windshields and they've been very good. The rear blade on the 4Runner is Bosch, maybe. I buy Bosch and Rain-X blades but to get the 'stow' attachment on the blade you'll have to go with a different brand. There are several options on Amazon for about $10. Many people don't know it, but you can actually buy just the rubber part of the wiper (sometimes called a wiper refill) from your Toyota dealership parts department. And they have these for the windshield and the rear wiper positions. You do need to still have the original equipment Toyota wiper blades on your vehicle for these to fit though.

To replace just the refill, all you need to do is remove the blade(s) for better access. Then you squeeze the stainless steel side rails together with a pair of pliers to allow you to slide the refill out of the blade. Swap the 2 stainless pieces over to the new refill and reverse the process.

Yes, buying a complete wiper blade is faster and a bit easier to change, but it's a lot more expensive. My personal experience shows that the OEM refills last longer too.

Another recommendation for the OEM Toyota refills. They are just as good, and in some cases much better than aftermarket wipers.

As others have said, the OEM Toyota refill is what you need if you have the original wiper assembly. It is typically $8-9 from a dealer and is just the flappy rubber blade piece. You will need to remove the old blade and reuse the metal inserts from it to stiffen up the new blade. Be carefully removing the old blade to prevent bending the inserts up. The Toyota part number is 85214-22440.
