We help motor enthusiasts rent DIY workspace

Hi everyone,

GarageTime is excited to be a new T4R sponsor! As a 3rd gen owner, and apartment dweller, I used to change my oil on the roof of a parking garage since I didn’t have vehicle workspace. Frustrated that there was no solution to working on my own vehicles without owning a home, I created a solution. GarageTime helps vehicle enthusiasts find, book, and pay for DIY workspace. The platform allows garage owners to get paid for sharing their space and tools - helping offset their costs and build the enthusiast community.

I find this interesting so I looked for an available space in my area. There's one in my area (California Bay Area) in San Mateo, 27 miles away from me. They want $45/hour. The guy that runs the place says he will help which is cool, but who knows how good he is. There's also tools there you can use, but again, what if he's lacking a critical tool you need.

That seems pretty steep to me. For that price, you may as well just pay a shop to do it that charges around $100/hour and not have to spend the time wrenching. Another concern is what happens if you run into a snag and can't get your rig running or back together. I guess you'd then be forced to tow it out of there or continue to pay by the hour during their hours of operation.

I feel for people who like to do their own wrenching but don't have the space to do it in. Definitely one of the downsides to apartment living.

That is a very cool concept. I have all these projects I'd like to do, but neither the space or setup money for my own shop.

This is a great idea! As a former apartment dweller, I know the struggle.

Hmm.. nearest rent a garage from me is 350mi. Looks like this is just for big cities.

Hey Tim,

We have a private messaging system through our platform to let you chat with garage owners before booking, allowing you to ask about tools, overtime policies, and other inquiries. Garage owners can also ask about what kind of job you intend to do, and reject something they feel their space isn't equipped for or has a higher chance of running over the booking time.

We're built for auto enthusiasts that want to connect with their vehicles. If 50% off shop rates and getting your hands dirty isn't your thing, then paying for full service is certainly the better option. At the end of the day, we want to provide an option for those limited by space & tools, while promoting the responsible consumption of resources. We hope GarageTime can do that.

Thanks Greg. I hear you on not having space or money! We just launched so I hope we're able to provide something in your area. Keep us in mind as we continue to grow, and I'm confident we'll be able to provide a solution for your projects.

We just launched, so please check back with us as we grow and add more listings. Feel free to mention our site to anybody with a garage near you...maybe they will list and get you workspace sooner than you think!

I already do all my own wrenching at my home in San Jose. I also make repair videos with my buddy Sean. Here's a link to our channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC9E...y61kJ6hdXcbjxA

I do agree that learning about auto mechanics and taking the challenge is interesting and rewarding. It's one of the reasons I got into it. But, for many, their main motivator for doing their own work is out of necessity to save themselves the high labor rates shops charge. At $45/hour, you're still saving but then you have to ask how much your time is worth. I know most DIY mechanics like myself will take longer to do a repair, maintenance job or modification than a shop would take because many times it's our first time doing something and we're learning as we go. So now, the total savings will be even less compared to what a shop will charge.

I'm guessing other parts of the country have hourly shop rates much more affordable than we have in the California Bay Area.

Anyway, that's my pragmatic 2 cent opinion.

Great concept, I hope it works out for you as a successful business. While in the military we had auto 'hobby shops' where the stalls were rented ( very cheaply ) by the hour and a tool crib to do most of the things you needed to do.

I'm interested in seeing more about your shop, I'm *this* close to packing up and moving back to CO. It would be nice to know that there's a place to do maintenance on my 19 year old truck. :thumb:

To clarify, we don't have our own shop. We are a platform that allows garages to list their space. Think Airbnb for DIY workspace.

We actually have a shop listed outside of Baltimore, so you may not even need to move here to wrench! you can find here.
