The system could be low on refrigerant.
Fortunately, most Toyota products still have a sight glass in the refrigerant line in front of the radiator.
See the attached for how to use the sight glass.

It may also be the relay. This has happened on several 4th gens, mine included. You may want to try that before spending more money of coolant. It's in the main fuse box under the hood.

thanks! i'll check both things this morning.

A/C Light blinking / A/C dead???

Aloha folks, dont know i any of you had this problem before your A/C units crapped out...

3 days ago, I noticed that it was getting warm...when I looked at the A/C light, it was blinking on/off.

I'd press the A/C button to turn it off then back on and no problem.

Yesterday it happened a few times with me doing the same thing and it giving the same result.

Today, the light blinked and keeps blinking and No Coolness im my ride---dont' really appreaciate the A/C until you have none!!!!
I can turn it off and when I turn it back on, WARMNESS!!!! and more WARMNESS and if I leave it on, HOTNESS!!

I've been reading the other posts and no one mentioned anything like this as a symptom for a blown system, or just a part.....

I have an 03' V8 with 81K miles and this is the first major problem I've had in a while.

Oh, I always run with the A/C on Auto with it on the lowest setting most days.

Any info or .02$ would be appreciated! Thanks

The blinking light is THE symptom for a bad a/c relay. Many have said just take it out and bang it on the table a couple of times. Usually fixes it. A better approach is to go to your friendly neighborhood Toyota parts department and pick up the new relay that supersedes the original part.

Classic bad relay issue (Toyota used the wrong part)
So many 2003 4runners had that bad relay (and corolla

Thats why I love this site better then the Service Centers....people know more about the 4R's here than the actual mechanics the are supposed to be fixin em!!!

Mahalo Nui Loa!!!

Well 60$ and my A/C is Blowing COLD!!!!! Thanks all for your assistance.

In case anyone reading this is like me and DONT KNOW WHERE THE DAMN RELAY GOES!?!?! -----It is located inside your engine compartment on the drivers side middle area, theres a rectangular box. Pop off the lid and inside the lid is a DIAGRAM for which relay is which.

A Toyota Mechanic actually did give me a really good tip today....

If you have this relay die on you and you absolutely cannot stand the HEAT, The HORN relay can be swapped out with the A/C one.

Your decision will come down to how badly you really want your horn!!

Peace!

I have a 03 T4R sport . the A/C prob is the relay under your hood in fuse box. I took the the relay from my fog lights and used it for the A/C untill i got a new one, they are the same. RELAY ABOUT 70$ AT AUTOZONE. My buddy has been a toyota mechanic for 40 years he got me one at his cost 38$.

FYI, the proper relay is marked "MG CLT" for magnetic clutch.

control head

I have a 2005 Toyota 4runner. My air conditioner suddenly started blowing hot air. Took it to the dealership yesterday and was told the control head is not grounding the magnetic clutch. Cost to replace control head is $1069.07 not including labor! Please help!

Rix 08-25-2011 11:54 AM

The new relay should have 02028 as the last 5 of the part number.
The original is 02022 IIRC.
(first 5 is 89667 or something like that)
