Ordered a "Plug and Play" Android headunit

7 Attachment(s)
I ordered one of these Xtrons units off of amazon yesterday. It's supposed to fit the stock opening in the 4th gens without a faceplate kit and is supposed to be plug and play retaining steering wheel controls. I have an 08 SR5 non jbl. The stock fit and unlimited customizing available were the big selling points. DVR dashcam, OBDII in the dash, offline GPS, and google play store will all be cool. It seems like XTRONS gives decent product support as opposed to some of the other Chinese units and there is a sprinkling of youtube review that looks decent. I'll let you guys know how it works out- https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07F84ZMCG

Update- Installed the unit. So this issue was actually my fault but I will leave this info here for you folks.Major issue is the DVD player seems DOA. I have a replacement on the way from amazon and put an email in with xtrons. Takes the disk but it does not spin. Ejects fine. . So, I'm an idiot. There are 2 screws on the top of the unit that are used to secure the optical drive. I failed to remove these even though there is a giant yellow sticker that tells you too. Probably should have been more sober, whoops.

Attached are photos of the install. No splicing needed. It is plug and play and fits perfectly. Looks stock esp with the toyota logo on startup
Wifi, bluetooth, work good. You can change button color to match stock, or any other color. Unit boots fast (20-30 seconds)and has a 1 hour sleep mode to make reboot instant on subsequent starts. Steering controls work. You can map them with short press and long press functions. Still need to test stock AUX. Google maps looks good, will test tomorrow. Built in mic seems good. I called someone and they said the clarity was fine. Google assistant works fine. You can use all the normal apps youtube, pandora, play store. The screen resolution is 800x480 which is lower than advertised (correct resolution is listed on xtrons website, but not on amazon.), but still looks good. Resolution is equal to the high end pioneers. Sound seems the same or better than stock. Still messing around with stuff, but it looks promising.

Overall initial impressions:

Pros-
Looks stock without those cheesy side panels and is unbranded on the front
100% Plug and Play
Layout and functionality is 100% customizable
Touch screen looks awesome and is very responsive
Unit is fast
Looks and feels quality
Xtrons customer support was fast and effective

Cons-

Untested longevity
Sound quality probably isn't on par with the $500+ units
Not exactly cheap

Overall I am really happy with it so far!

Looks like a pretty cool unit! I'd be curious of what you think of the UI and if the audio portion of it is up to par with a comparable name brand unit. Definitely looking forward to your review!

I've heard the atoto brand is really solid.

I just installed an ATOTO A6 and I'm amazed. I did do the Toyota version that fits our dashes perfectly and it was plug and play besides I thing 2.wires. Supports dash cam, dual Bluetooth, tpms monitors and of course android and carplay/android auto too. Only thing I don't like is the volume being on the passenger side instead of drivers side.

Does this retain use of steering wheel controls? That would make the location of the volume controls a non-issue for many of us.

i was looking into the atoto unit, the fj guys and ft-86 guys seem to like it alot. does the stock aux still work? i guess it wouldnt matter much with bluetooth but it would be nice if it did

My head unit was Plug-N-Play as well.
(that's exactly what I was searching for)

Took me longer to take the center dash out
than it did for me to "install" the player.

I love modern technology.

This is good feedback, thanks. Please post a pic as I'm interested in the factory oem plastic surround trim piece and how this radio works with it.

Thanks.

More details and pics please. Do you have the factory JBL system? that's what I have and was thinking if I should bypass all that with the new head unit of this type.

Mine is called OttoNavi.
I found my unit on Amazon, but you can Google it as well.
Not sure of the model number, but it is the one pictured below.
I did NOT have the JBL system with the subwoofer or steering wheel controls,
it was the basic OEM unit.
I'm pretty sure there were head units out there that were Plug-N-Play for the JBL system, but since I didn't have one, I didn't pay much attention to them.
To be fair, these are not the best units out there.
I bought it for the price (+$200).
But customer support was pretty good,
and they helped me when I had to update my GPS map.

This looks like a rebranded version of the xtrons player, or both are rebranded generics. 6.2" Android 8.1 with Full RCA Output In-Dash GPS Navigation Multimedia System Custom Fit for Toyota | Xtrons

I updated my review to mention the DVD issue was my fault. I failed to remove the shipping screws. I took a bunch of install pics. If anyone needs a hand let me know.

I havent had a chance to mess with any other similar units to be honest, but I assume the higher non android units will have nicer/ sleeker UI out of the box. I customized the home screen for my needs quickly without downloading too much stuff. Pressing the mode button on the steering wheel gets be back to my home screen so I can concentrate on driving. The functionality is incredible to be honest, and fully customizable.

Thanks for the help guys, very helpful. Is there a screen size that is basically a standard given the double DIN size? I see lots of screen sizes on Amazon but you fellas have 6" screen size it appears?

Mines about 7" viewing area. The unit is a hair over 200mm wide. Its fits the stock opening perfectly because its designed specifically for toyota.

A standard double din unit requires a faceplate kit to fill the gaps in the stock opening.

Thanks for the reply. So, I"ll look for a radio made for Toytas. Sounds like Bestfit website has a faceplate that fits the JBL system well. Right?
