Anyone here with a 5th gen on 285s? (local question)

I'm more of a low-life and enjoy my cars closer to the ground but my fiance wants to go the opposite direction and lift the 2018 OR w/KDSS.

Those with 285s, do you have any issues going over the pass into snoqualmie or HWY 2/Steven's pass? I've read a bit about regearing, but is it necessary in our area? We're going with a modest 2" lift using a set of Pro takeoff Bilsteins, want to get everything tackled at once.

Thanks in advance!

You will be fine I hardly noticed the change to 285 in c range. I’m in ca but I assure you we get some steep grades in the sierras. Regearing would be good idea but not necessarily in my opinion unless you’re going to be loading a bunch of extra weight on as well

May i ask what MPG you are getting??

I went from 19 MPG combined to 13.8 Combined after upgrading from stock to mud terrain 285s, 3.5" lift and the gobi roof rack..

At this point, am not sure what destroyed my MPG :noidea:

I wouldn't re-gear unless going with 35s (315-325s). If you had a 4cyl 285x75-17 with 3.73 rings i'd say regear. With the 4.0 and 5 speed you'll drop th 3rd or 4th more often and be there a bit longer up the pass but you won't drop speed.

I will chime in and say with 285 BFG KO2's in C range on 8.5 inch wheels, I am averaging a combined 16.4 miles per gallon with a 3" lift and a C4 Lo Pro Bumper.

You went from P rated tire 265's (if that's what you meant by stock) to E rated 285's... that's probably 2 miles per gallon. Lift making you less aerodynamic lets go with 1 mpg, and the weight of the rack is 1 mpg. Just throwing a few things out there!

Can't find the other 1.2 mpg, but that gets it in the ball park. Biggest culprit being tires in your scenario. I'm guessing you have an app or are doing the math on your MPG's rather than trusting the computer on your 4runner.

Just trying to help you find those lost mpg's!

Thanks for the reply guys, appreciate it!

Ended up going with 275/70/17s with a mild 2" lift. Not going to re-gear per your recommendations

Thanks! Yes i think you summed it up pretty accurately! and yes i am calculating at the pump, as the gauge numbers are off now.. I kinda took a big hit! But it looks amazing

A little late the party and just found this section of the forums.

I've had my 2012 4R trail since day 1, I'm at 130k. This whole time I've had no lift and 285s BFG AT. Basic maintenance and avg 16mpg. It's my daily but still hit the trails every every now and then.... tahuya and reiter mostly. I had a FJ with 3"lift and 285s before this 4runner and regeared 4.88 thinking it would help my overall setup. The cost of the work didnt really justify the modest mods.
