Prinsu roof rack install
Hey guys,
I just got a Prinsu roof rack for my 2008 4runner. I am nervous about drilling into the roof. Does anyone know of a thorough install guide or video? cant seem to find one. Thanks! |
No drill install on 4th gen.

yep no drill, get some clear silicone and seal the crap out of the bolts in the factory rivnuts though. Also I would recommend installing then ordering new spacers to get it to sit flush and with a proper spacer ID to actually fit the bolt size unless they've fixed that issue.

Yep, no drilling needed.
Instead of the spacers, I went a cheaper route that worked pretty well. Used some 3/4x3/4 aluminum bar stock and drilled the mounting holes through that. https://www.amazon.com/Pieces-ALUMIN.../dp/B01F80WM02 For the front or rear (can't remember which) I had to also stack a 3/4x1/8 aluminum strip (from local big box store) to bring it up a little bit. The spacing is nice and tight without touching the roof, about 1/16-1/8 space between rack and roof. |
Run a tap through the roof mounts to clear out any old loctite, I stripped one before I figured this out. Also be extra careful not to drop one of the nut inserts in the roof, if it falls in you have to pull the headliner to put in a new one.

also big x2 on gratuitous silicone usage. I basically filled the spacers all the way up, then pushed the bolt through it and into the nutserts in the roof. This is an area where you can't use too much and it is truly cheap insurance against leaks and water damage to your head liner/etc. |
Like others have said, its an easy bolt on. There is no drilling required. Everything included in the box was needed to install properly. The spacers included set everything up nice and level. I set mine up on the 4runner piece by piece, but you can also loosely bolt everything together and then lift it on the vehicle. Took me a couple hours to put it all together.
Only thing you'll need are some tools, silicone and some rags to clean up the roof when you take off the old rack. You can check out my insta (@shadow4runner), i took a couple photos during the install. A lot of guys who answered here helped when i asked as well. |

Is Silicone all that is needed to make it watertight? I have seen others recommend a 3M Water Tight Sealant that is silicone based like this one...
3M™ Fire Barrier Water Tight Sealant 3000 WT | 3M United States Don't want to waste my money if basic silicone is up to the task. |
I know I know I'm anal. This was my front and rear gap with the 1" spacers provided. I went to 7/8" spacers in the front and 3/4" spacers in the rear with a smaller ID.
