mobil 1 synthetic vs toyota OEM oil

Planning to do my 1st oil change soon. Any difference using Mobil 1 synthetic vs. OEM toyota 0-20 oil?

I use the toyota oil and filter because the dealership always has it. I use Mobil 1 in my Silverado but sometimes I have to go to multiple stores to get it.

Mobil 1 at Walmart. 5 quarts is about $27.00(7 quarts needed) and use a factory filter.

^^^ This is what I do as well for all of my vehicles. Mobile1 occasionally goes on "rollback" at Wallyworld for even cheaper.

Walmart mobil one sales occasionally. I ended up with 40 qts of full synthetic euro at like $15

Mobile 1 quietly lost LL01 certification for BMW a while back so I took a hard look at it. It's not a great oil. it's decent oil but testing over time wasn't impressive in my research. On the other hand Castrol edge is fantastically rated. (For now)

That said regular changes are generally sufficient but I eyeball my oil choice sideways every so often after being quietly screwed by m1.

Reading up on 0w20 is interesting. In the end I opted for edge with Toyota filters. A pair of 5 quart bottles ran me a bit over $50 via prime. Another bottle will give me two oil changes easy.

I'm also not a big fan of Mobil 1, although I haven't tried the 0W-20. My experience is with Volkswagens and VW 502 spec oil. I've used both Mobil 1 0W-40 and Castrol Edge 0W-40, and the car definitely runs smoother and quieter on the Castrol which seems to be a bit thicker and doesn't shear down as quickly. Both oils are simarly priced. I'll probably stick with Edge when I get my 4Runner.

Toyota doesn't make oil so it's anyone that can get the contract and that meets specs.

Mobil 1 is only recommended by companies they sent checks to.

In the end, any off the shelf oil with the correct viscosity will work. Just change it when it's needed.

I have used Mobile1 in my 3rd gen since it was new. I just hit 300k, the cams and heads look brand new with no visible wear or discoloration. I’m going to stick with that for my 5th gen!

i've used M1 and Toyota OEM in the past on my 5th gen. have used the toyota oil the last 2 oil changes because my local parts guy gave me a good price on it and I was there anyways getting something else.

Toyota oem for me, $6.30 a quart at my local dealer and since I am still under warranty, want to make sure they have no excuses.

It's the same. Toyota OEM oil is made by Mobil.

enyce 03-15-2019 09:51 AM

Mobil 1 0W-20 and Wix oil filter since day one. 36,000 miles currently and the engine has zero problems. Keep in mind Toyota does not make their own oil or filters. They do ask manufacturers to add certain additives to their brand to stand apart from others.

Another option for any Canadians, Motomaster Formula 1 Synthetic is a full synthetic made by Shell for Canadian Tire, goes on sale as low as $16.99CAN for 5L, I stock up when it goes on sale. I use this stuff in all my gas engines.
I'm sticking with Toyota filters.

Also, Mobil 1 is junk as far as synthetic oils go, with the exception of the 0w20 Euro grade that is made in Germany. Historically, this was the only grade of Mobil 1 that was actually a full synthetic and not a blend marketed as a full synthetic.

My Local Costco has a case of 6qrts Mobil 1 0W20 for $25. I use that with OEM filter.
