I just installed the Borla S-Type Cat-Back Exhaust Systems (p/n 140760) on my 2013 Trail edition 4Runner with kdss. It fit great no rattling on heat shields. No drone on the highway and it’s slightly louder than the stock one at idle. The S-Type model has no exhaust tip, just a angled cut pipe, look like the stock one. Reason for replacing the stock one was it was rusting out and the new Borla exhaust is stainless steel.

The only thing I’m disappointed in, there was no donut gasket supplied. I had to reuse the old one until I could get a new one. I have had plenty of exhaust systems on my cars and truck over the years and they always come with all the gaskets. This is the first Borla bolt on that I have purchased.

I wish you were a lot closer than santa cruz so i can come by and have a listen. Still waiting for Battleborn or Borla to send me a tracking confirmation.

Please keep us updated if you decide to do a sound clip!

I love mine too....I am however thinking about having it modified to side exit....I feel like it should have come like that from the factory I’m tired of the soot on the rear interior panels....bad design Toyota!

Just curious as to what advantages this particular exhaust system holds over the stock, other than that it is stainless.

Thanks !

12lbs lighter that stock, 2.5” versus 2.25” stock, flows better than stock and has louder more aggressive sound than stock

Got mine this week and had it installed today.

Why I bought it:
Stainless, check
Better flow, check I guess
Clearance, fail
Sound, not loving it
Less smell, fail

Clearance. In all the photos it provides better clearance and it tucked up under. Mine is not. Sticks out and down same as stock. Horrible cut as well, rough and and off to the left. Even looks like it has taken a hit. Hack job looking.

Sound. It is deeper and throatier. Most noticeable at lower rpm, higher it is not a huge improvement. The opposite of what I expected

The bummer is for some reason my stock exhaust nuts where tack welded. So when they removed the stock exhaust they cut it out, so now I can’t put it back on.

Expected more from a premium brand

I installed mine on tuesday. I still need to do a sound clip. I like it but I dont like the noise in the cabin. Not sure if the Y-pipe has anything to do with it. Now I'm thinking if I should've went with the touring version.

As for the tack weld. did you check the other side of it? I was trying to unbolt the pipe after the stock muffler and stripped the bolt but noticed it was tack welded. Then realized i was suppose to unscrew the nuts on the other side (nuts facing the cargo area).

So what are you planning on doing? Put your stock back on and weld up the piping they cut off?

I'm debating if a resonator will tone everything down :(

You can see the offset rough cut and how it sticks out further and down. Not any better for clearance

Honestly I don’t know what to do. I called the muffler place and called them out on cutting up my stock system and they gave me some BS. They said they can butt weld it back together, but rust will love that. Crap!

At the very least I am contacting Battleborm to get a replacement.

I don’t think your Y pipe is the culprit on the cabin sound, I have it as well. May try and see if they will replace this exhaust with the touring version. There are not many options really that don’t add a lot more volume.

dang. I was planning on calling Borla to see how to tone this down.
Please update us if Battleborn does anything. I was looking at their return policy and :(

Can we get some in cabin sound clips. Looking for something that can give me some feedback at low rpm sounds like this might be an option.

PM your number. i'll throw my phone in the rear and record and i can send you the clip. i'm going to head to work in about 30min. its 5 miles away so you'll get street and freeway.

Honestly it sounds great. throaty. no rasp when i floor it.
I dont hear it when i have the radio on.
cold start you can hear it initially but goes away. Idle you cant hear it. 35mph you can slightly hear it if you have the windows down and radio on low.
Highway/freeway speeds (75pmh) is when you can hear it in the back.
I would honestly keep it but LA is freeway city.

Really debating if i should add a resonator if that'll tone it down.
Going to call Borla today if i have time to discuss with them.

if this is on your list let me know. i can definitely meet you halfway. go wheeling around the middle somewhere lol.

The drive isnt bad either. I bought this 4R in Tuscon and drove it home to El Segundo.

edit: if i was still in my teens early 20's i would rock this. I had a 2 chamber flowmaster chopped right after the muffler on my tacoma. freaking loved it. lol

Hey Fellas,

I have this exhaust too and don't think it's loud at all. With the windows up I can't even hear it. It's perfect, IMO.

Might not be what I'm looking for then.

I don't really care about top end noise. Or it being dead quiet in the cab (minus drone).

I want something that I can hear in the cab windows up or down at low rpm while offroading to get an idea where engine speed is. While navigating obstacles I don't want to have to look down at the tach just to know what's going on with the drivetrain (besides what my butt dyno can tell me). Also be nice just to hear a refined low growl just while putting around town.

My 3rd gens stock exhaust seemed to give me exactly that. 5th gen is too quiet for me.

Ryan at Eibach 06-07-2019 01:28 PM

With windows down you'd be fine.
