Someone recently wanted to install a BNSF train horn on theirs. Not sure if they ever did it or not.

I want a train horn on mine do bad for the idiots that can't drive!

Yep I actually just completed the install today.

Got this one over two years ago, sorry the link provided is from Amazon's UK page but apparently it's not sold in the US anymore:

GAMPRO Truck Air Horn 12V 150db 450mm Chrome Zinc Single Trumpet Air Horn with Compressor for Any 12V Vehicles Trucks Lorrys Trains Boats Cars: Amazon.co.uk: Car & Motorbike

Anyway it's a great horn albeit one for a boat! I had it mounted on a Jeep Patriot before moving it to the new 4Runner. Don''t have pics just yet but the install is straightforward. I used the same bolts for the stock dual horn mount just behind the grill, one for the compressor and one for the trumpet, and just angled the trumpet straight down. Only one connector is needed, just the passenger side horn wiring, battery, and ground. Painted it flat black before I installed it because I really hate chrome.

It's loud as hell and definitely gets people's attention when I need it. I've made a habit of honking at ever cellphone user I see.

I recently installed a pair of PIAA Superior Bass horns and i'm pretty happy with them.

I put this one on right after I got mine:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I've been quite happy with it, it's super loud. I used a couple of random brackets to mount it in the stock location, but it is on a relay coming off the battery via a distribution block.

did you need a relay? keep hearing the PIAA horns don't need one, how easy was the install?

Y'all may want to read this entire thread before you swap out horns.

Amen. I was going to dig up this thread as a cautionary tale regarding horn upgrades, thanks for beating me to it.

What about a factory Toyota horn but from a different model like a LC ?
Something that would be a direct swap. Toyota factory horns all can’t be wimpy like the PeeWee Herman horn the 4R comes with .

I personally think the 2014 and up horns are just fine, i always get the obligatory middle finger salute in response to my horn usage about 99 percent of the time.

I've run aftermarket piaa's in past vehicles....they have a loud and high pitch, but they aren't exactly authoritative either... I like the stock 4runner deeper low pitch/tone.

I think the high pitch horn is a japanese design/safety thing.

So what you are trying to say is do not use an aftermarket horn without a relay. Because...the ECM, or integration relay, can be knocked out by voltage surges that the oem electrical system wasn't designed for. Gotcha...thanks

Compromised4Runner 07-22-2019 12:58 AM

I'd like to find one that is a "drop-in" replacement.

I'm saying that seemingly simple and minor changes may have pretty significant consequences.

Only you can decide if the benefit is worth the risk and if a relay will mitigate the risk.
