Vibration gone when cornering
Hello all, a few days ago I posted saying I have steering wheel vibration and a wobble.
The wobble was pretty much fixed with a road force balance and tire pressure adjustment. However I still have a CONSTANT vibration in my steering wheel. Can start feeling it at 40mph+ and never goes away unless I go under 40. It's not a bad vibration, but its there and never goes away and its driving me nuts. It feels like I'm holding an electric toothbrush. I noticed something these last two days of driving. Whenever I take a bend on the freeway, for the entire time that I am on that bend, the vibration is gone. As soon as I'm straight again, it comes back. What the heck can this be? Also, is it crazy for me to think this vehicle should have zero vibrations in the steering wheel? I should also mention that I feel the vibration coming from the bottom of the steering wheel. If I put my hand on the steering column, I can feel it there pretty good. Vehicle going into dealership tomorrow, and I may possibly get new tires if they cant fix it. I haven't slept in a week. Had just traded in my 19 Tacoma for tons of problems with it, and now this one. I appreciate the feedback. |
Personally, I think it is all in your head. Brand new Tacoma and brand new 4runner with the same problem? Highly unlikely. Just relax and enjoy your vehicle.

On the 4runner I may be hypersensitive, but there's definitely a vibration. Wife feels it too, she just says it's not something that would bother her personally. It does bother me though. I just found this: Buzzing noise/vibration in steering wheel Dude is saying the exact same thing I am, although on mine I highly doubt it's the bearings as the vehicle is brand new, but who knows. |
I haven’t been following your vibe posts, but have you looked into the front diff needle bearing issues some Toyota’s have? It’s common among Tacoma’s and 4Runners with part time 4wd. East Coast Gear makes a bushing swap for it. Relatively easy to diagnose. Hope that helps.

What tires are you running? What size are said tires? Have you had the alignment checked? Stands to reason that issues that go away when cornering may be due to a bad alignment.

@BCMUSA
Can you list your mods, or lack of, in your sig? Super helpful for everyone, just FYI. I had this issue on our GX. Tried balancing, but it didn't solve it fully. Getting the alignment dialed in with everything zeroed out with as much positive caster as possible should help alleviate the vibrations. First is the tire balance. Which you've done. Second, Good alignment
Improper caster will lead to steering shimmy. With the factory injected rubber bushings in the LCA, they will move around quite a bit. Which creates a bunch of oscillation that travels to the steering components. Last step would be dialing in your PSI specific for tire and environment. Won't help a ton, but it will help. BTW, love your products. Good luck trying to find a decent alignment tech. https://i.imgur.com/6q7UZ24.jpg Quote:

Guys thank you very much for the input. I really appreciate it.
I am fully stock. I will definitely get alignment checked. |

Is this it? How is it diagnosed? Thank you |
No, you’re not out of line for expecting no buzzing vibrations in your steering wheel. I had a tire balance steering wheel shake and the front diff needle bearing. Now both resolved. Not once would I have ever described at as a buzz. The front diff needle bearing issue is diagnosed by seeing if the cyclic groan goes away in 4wd.

This has been an issue for awhile and is seen in a lot of members here. I had this as well, when reaching about 50-60mph the steering wheel vibrates but once you go past 60 or lower down it disappears and doesnt reappear until you stop and go again. I pretty much accepted it, and somewhere between the 3 different changes in shocks it disappeared. Cant say for sure if it was that or due to getting alignments everytime but one of the two stopped my issue.

I noticed on mine today that some of these rims have a ton of balancing weights on them. One had like a 6" strip taped inside plus another weight clamped on the rim. Doesn't seem normal? Anyways, tomorrow it's going to dealership and we will see what they say. Either way my plan is to get an alignment and request they do what the member here suggested, probably get new tires, and get those RFB as well. I want to love this thing, but this buzzing type vibration is driving me nuts. I can feel it come and go in the gas pedal too. |
