2019 Paint quality... is it just me?
Voodoo Blue pro here... I have less than 5k miles on my truck and I have counted 11 paint chips. On my 2017 cement Tacoma Pro, I had ZERO when I traded it in.
In my opinion, this paint is straight garbage. I even have layered ceramic coating on it from mile 10, no difference. I have brought this to the attention of my sales rep and he said he would check into things, but in a year, this is going to look like some bullshit. |
You can thank all the enviro nazis for making paint low voc which equals mostly garbage.

Toyota paint is horrible.

this was one of the things I liked most about the BPW... I thought I recall reading that unless you get a pearl color the paint for the non pearl models is 2 stage... primer/base with the clear mixed in to the base? I could be totally wrong though.

Toyota has always had thin paint, my 2018 Pro has at least a dozen or more chips on the leading edge of the hood in just 10 months of use. I gave up almost immediately on attempting to combat it, sadly it is what it is and you have the enviro nazis to thank for it. You're kidding yourself if you think Toyota is going to do anything for you, that's simply wear and tear, the paint warranty only covers defects and corrosion. I say let go and embrace the chips, dings, and scratches and you'll find more joy in using it.
Here is what my paint looks like after a single trip to Big Bend (Oso Loop). It sucked the first day, but I am over it now lol. https://i.imgur.com/vFYCsl5.jpg |

Look if Toyota say used a full zinc rich primer, placed on top of hexvalent chrome sealer, then top coated primer with a quality high voc coating and finished off with a nice gma or similar, these trucks wouldnt rust. INcrease paint thickness doesnt always correlate with increased mechanical properties of the coating, in fact often times higher dry film thickness equates to poorer mechanical properties. You didnt hear anybody grumbling about cadium arsenic chrome lead based coatings..they were great! |

Yup lot's of chips. Then gouged the plastics a few times tring to shred my stock tires off road so now they are bedlined. I wheel the truck so often (Arizona Desert) my paint is already ****ed at 12K. I'm not selling the truck tho so whatever. Try giving less f**ks. It's just a thing. For all you know someone will run a light today and total your truck (I hope it doesn't for everyone's safety and insurance). Additionally if you take her offroad more the other trail scars will cancel it out (it's science). |
You can take every single one of these posts and swap "Toyota" for any other brand and post the identical thing on any other car forums.
Every brand has "thin" paint. When I had my xyz, the paint was great, but now, my abc has terrible paint. Ceramic coatings won't stop paint chips, only PPF (paint protection film - aka "clear bra") will help with that. Paints have actually gotten better and you can now get the same lustre and depth with far thinner coatings. Galvanizing parts has slowed rust (at least in most areas of the US) and peeling clearcoats are getting to be virtually unheard of. Back away from the guy ahead of you and you'll reduce pain chips. Don't go off-road and you'll reduce them too:) PPF for the win - front bumper, part of the leading edge of the hood/fenders, wheel arches and the area above the windshield and you're set. Add some ceramic and (if you don't scratch it), your car will look like new 10 years down the road. |

I have a 2012 with 100K+ miles with salsa red pearl paint and I'm amazed how good the paint still looks. Must be better quality on the pearl paint jobs.
