Custom Subwoofer Box

I wanted to get subwoofers for my 4Runner without taking away from the usable space in the back and boxes that fit where I am putting mine can end up costing a ton of money so I have decided to make my own that go over the wheel wells in the back. If anyone has done this before or has any good advice I would love to hear it. I am at work right now but i will post pictures of what I have gotten done when I get home.

If you some handywork skills and basic tools, building a fiberglass enclosure yourself is "relatively" easy albeit a little bit time consuming. Blue painters tape the rear area where youd like the sub (right pocket area in particular). Cover completely with plenty of buffer tape. Lay down some fiberglass MAT not cloth from home depot, dab with fiberglass resin. Lather, rinse repeat, until you have a few layers covering the desired area. Let it cure overnight. LEAVE CAR OUTSIDE! Resin smell will permeate garage and house and significant other will likely threaten to murder you if you dont. Remove shell. Add additional layers until content with thickness. Buy or cut 10" MDF speaker ring and glue to thick dowels and glue into position in shell. Resin pegs in for further support. Drape enclosure in felt from fabric store and glue taught to the shell. Paint resin onto the felt and let harden. Trim excess fabric from shell and lay fiberglass on hardened felt until desired thickness. Once all is cured, sand, bodyfill if needed/desired, sand some more and cut out resined cloth speaker ring inner and cut a hole for the wiring post block. Then just glue down speaker carpet to your new enclosure.

I know it sounds involved but honestly its pretty easy and WAAAAAYYY cheaper than any premade mass built phantom box you'd likely find out there.

Which back do you have? The shelves or third row pocket?

Here is another way to go. I have good connections with my audio place where I live. They have done numerous installs for me. I recently had them add a powered Rockford Fosgate 8inch sub box to my 19Z06. It has the sub knob to control the sub. If I need to remove it out of my trunk on the Vette it’s easy to do. It don’t take up a lot of room and you could add this I the back of the 4runner. This sub kicks ass. Don’t let it fool you because of 8inch sub. They have added a lot of these subs to full size trucks. Just a little info. My 2020 Pro already has the JBL system with the sub. I could add this if I needed more base. Not sure if there available because of the COVID going on. My audio place told me there having issues getting Rockford audio stuff. I was lucky to get one from them before they sold them out.
