leveling cargo area with 3rd row

Looks like I bought the wrong optioned model. I didn't want 3rd row to begin with but that was all that was available at the time with lowish miles.

Is building a platform the only way to have a flat area to sleep on? Can the second row be replaced with one from a non-3rd row 4runner? Will that make it flat?

The floor pan is different for non-3rd row and 3rd row vehicles, so you can't easily swap the 2nd rows. A platform is your best bet, with the 2nd row completely removed so you have more room.

So the attachment points differ and I won't be able to drill holes to bolt on a proper second row?

Yes, the attachment points are very different and it's more complicated than simply drilling new holes. For the back part of the seats, the non 3rd row has hinge mount brackets that suit the 60/40 split with the 40 section on the drivers side. The 3rd row equipped also has 60/40 split, but with the 40 on the passenger side and they are not hinge mounts, they are anchor mounts. I'm not saying it can't be done, but when you're messing around with seat anchors and seat belt anchors, you run a big risk of making things unsafe.
