2006 4Runner V6 4x4 stuck in 4hi. But saying 4lo. P2772

Hey guys. I have been messing with my 4runner for a while now and I can figure anything out. Maybe someone can help me out.

2006 4Runner V6 4x4 sport.
3" space lift.

I been driving it for about 7k miles with no issues. Do quiet a lot of off roading so I have switched back and forth between 2HI-4HI-4LO. I use them all.

About a month ago I went thru a water crossing that was about 14" tall. No issues

2 weeks later I went from a 265 70 17. To a 285 70 17 tire. Right when I did that, about 3 Miles after the new tires I went off roading on some local trails and engaged 4wd. Played around for a little, but when it came time to go home, I tried to put the car back into 2hi but all the lights started flashing on the dash. The 4x4 light. 4lo light. Diff lock light. So I restarted the car 2x and it went back into 2hi.

About 3 days later while driving on sand in 4x4, they lights all came on again and this time they wouldn't to away. And they weren't flashing but the 4x4 light and 4lo stayed on. Keep in mind I was driving in the sand with 4hi.....not 4lo.

Anyways now it's been about a week and the truck is stuck in 4hi. I drive it to work doing 70mph so I know indeed that its 4hi. Not 4lo. But the dash lights show that it's in 4lo and I don't have my 5th gear anymore.

I read about the actuator in the center diff going bad.....I opened it up because I thought water got in.. nope. Clean. And I read about the motor being stuck or frozen. Its not. I will disconnect my wiring plug for the front diff actuator and I can hear the center actuator moving around inside. It moves the gears around.

Oh and the truck is showing P2772 code Four Wheel Drive Low Switch Circuit Range/Performance

Sounds like an issue with the switch on the dash maybe? Or the cabling running down to the transfer case. My .02

Fixed it

so i fixed it. all good now.

The car was in 4hi. But the ECU was thinking it was in 4LO. Getting horrible gas mileage. I was thinking it was my front diff actuator. Took that off, used a 9V battery to power the motor and it moved back and forth. Hit the center diff with a rubber mallet and no luck.

What ended up fixing my issue was unbolting the 3 12mm bolts out holding the actuator to the center diff about 1/4"-1/2" and sliding it out while my wife was cycling thru 4lo, 4hi. Viola.....that did the trick. The actuator finally moved around. I can now put the 4runner in 4lo, 4hi, or 2hi. The only issue was in 2hi, the green 4wd light was blinking along with the center diff light. But it truly was in 2hi now.

The next step I had to do was to realign the actuator gears. Took them out and set them how they are pictured in this thread.

I did have to do it about 2 times because if you are off by about 10 degrees, it wont work and you will have the flashing lights. In the end, put it all together and it works perfect now. switches really easily between 2hi 4hi 4lo. no weird shifting like some people reported.

Only issue i have now is that my center diff takes a while to engage if im rolling. But once i stop and put my truck in neutral, pops in really quick.

Anyways i hope this helps somebody, i know i was freaking out this whole week thinking i need a new actuator since they are $600+. Let me know if you have any questions.
