2019 Hunting season

Has there been hunting threads in the past? Everything I found was about attempting to hunt with a 4r.

Yesterday was Antelope drawing here in MT, I drew an A tag this year. Also drew Anterless whitetail earlier this year. On top of general Deer and Elk, looks like I'm going to have a busy season this year. Been contacting local farmers and ranchers to get on. Already have a few lined up too let me on, so hopefully I can fill at least two tags this year.

Anyone else have big plans for the season?

You sure are going to be out and about a lot.

What do you mean by general deer and elk? Does that mean you have tags for those too?

I drew a bull elk tag for AZ GMU 7E for the late rifle hunt. Very excited for this hunt as this is my first draw. Going up this weekend to test the gear and do some early scouting. The serious scouting starts next month.

Keep this thread updated as there are at least two of us here that hunt. :D

Yeah in MT you can buy otc general deer tags and general elk tags. Pretty much good for the whole state except certain units that are special draw only.

This is my first year hunting antelope and I am VERY excited. My boss owns 3k acres on the west side of the Bridger mountains and might let me hunt elk out there!!! He went up yesterday and saw a few herds on the ranch.

I just really want an antelope and anything after that would just be extras for the year lol. I wouldn't know what too do with all the meat if I filled all 4 tags haha.

I hope to get to go this year. Might not be able to make the time. MIL is 90 years old, and not in good health. currently we are the 24-7 care givers.
The massive crowds have really changed my desire for hunting these days anyway. Tripping over all the other hunters isn't what I'm there for. I did draw an interesting archery tag in an area where I know some of the ranchers. So that would be good.
Good luck on the antelope.

Planning on a 10-day hunt in Idaho this year. I live in Washington, but I'm from Idaho and my dad and brother live in Idaho. So, I'll be joining them in hunting camp and going out in the woods to help stalk and retrieve game; I just won't shoot anything.

I'm fine with that.

Killed plenty over the years and now mostly enjoy spending time in the woods with friends and family.

Couple of years ago was moose camp near the Montana/Idaho border.

This year we're going deep in the woods on ATVs and tent camping. Can't wait.

Going on a scouting trip next Friday. Going for deer, elk, bear, and wolf.

Wolf in ID? Are you guys going to try to turn it in and get the bounty on it? How does that all work?

North central Nevada here. I don’t hunt big game (elk, antelope, deer) but have friends who do. I like elk meat and often get some packages from friends. I’m not too keen on deer or antelope, a little gamy for my tastes.

I like upland game, chukar, cottontail, etcetera. I have a 5.5 mile trail near the house full of springs and regularly flush chukars. Friends have an 750 acre ranch about 30 miles south of me which are thick in rabbits and hares. I can generally bag a couple cottontails from their porch in a minute or two, which are butchered and barbecued or put in the smoker on the spot.

I just purchased my 2018 4Runner, which replaced my 2002 Tacoma TRD, so will have to come up with something to toss the bagged game into to keep the back end free of blood.

SMOKED RABBIT IS THE BEST!!! I usually brine it overnight and lay a few slices of bacon on it too help the meat. My daughter always asks when we're going to have it again.

I haven't done any bird hunting of any sort really. Something that I want to try just haven't dedicated time to it.

I have a roof rack and that's where all my game goes in Ice chests. I put some deer quarters in the back on a tarp last year.... It worked and all but it got a little bloody. Im not worried, I tell my wife its my car and I ain't selling it any time soon. Transporting meat in a suv is hard in general. Plus I have two kids and they usually come with on day hunts so its not like I can lay down the back seats for ice chests.

Thanks for the feedback.

Since I live in a rual area in the north-central part of the state, near where NV/OR/ID intersect, my hunting is close and I don’t have to go far. If I field dress bagged game I generally put the meat in double zip lock gallon freezer storage bags I carry in a small school back pack. But if I’m feeling lazy or close to home I just toss the carcases in back. My 4Runner has a cargo mat, but there isn’t much of a lip to catch blood. Might just use a plastic tote.

Oklahoma here always big plans and definitely will be hunting out of the 4Runner as the pickup is gone. I did buy a small utility bed trailer last year late and have had plans to build a box blind in it but not sure if that's going to happen. Although....might forego archery to spend time building it. Can't wait...ready to fill the freezer.

I was thinking of buying those hitch baskets for next year. perfect spot too put a deer in a cooler. A whole lot easier than humping up a big ice chest to the roof basket.

nevada 08-21-2019 01:34 PM

we had at least one other hunting thread a while back.

I bought a "new" camper just after the 4th of july. im scrambling to get it ready for hunting season, which starts September first. ready or not the camper is going up in 3 days...

deer, elk, bear and cougar, all archery. all general OTC tags. the early season will end up being mostly a camping trip I think. we are reduced to spike bull only for a good majority of it this year.

I figure with the husky type liner in the rear, I'll just haul the ice chest in the back. That would suck going to the roof. I have seen some on hitch baskets too. Should work well for you.

Yeah saw a guy last year who just threw a whole buck on the back and drove into town like that lol. It was a cold day, average was in the low 20's so it worked I guess.
