Recovery gear brand recommendation
Hi all,
I am looking for the usual recovery gear: - D-ring shackles - snatch block - tree saver - winch damper. Would any of you have a recommendation for a good US brand that has served them well? I have found by browsing online GearAmerica but have no idea if it is any good (seems so). Thanks Eric |

They wont have everything you're looking for but check out Treaty Oak Offroad Treaty Oak Offroad — Recovery Gear I have their Kinetic rope and winch extension and have been very pleased with them! |
Thanks Kevin,
Checking them out |
Brands that I've had no problems with for recovery stuff are ARB, Warn and Pro-Comp and Smittybilt. ARB are Australian and I'm pretty sure the others are all owned by the same US company but I have no idea where their stuff is manufactured.

Good rule of thumb: working load be at least 1.5x the weight of your vehicle (loaded and trailer include if hauling a trailer). ARB probably one of the most reliable on the market but are Australian based company. I pieced mine together. Also look at local FB market (local clubs that have a fb page also have a market page). D-ring shackles: I have: GearAmerica 4.75T 3/4" (Currently looking for soft) Most any will work but ensure they are marked for proper working load and proper size for weight. If they are not marked and no documentation on the working load and breaking load limits DO NOT BUY. If budget isn't much of an issue, then I would look into soft shackles - less weight more strength, safer if in the event of equipment failure. Snatch block: I have: Orcish 10T work load There are many options out there not just for cars, but also marine grade. Choose based on if for synthetic rope or steel cable. Verify correct diameter for your rope/cable. Tree savers: I have: ARB treesaver (bought used from someone getting out of wheeling) Again brand not a huge thing if there is documentation to working load limit and breaking load limit. Don't limit your search to tree saver - marine slings will also work (verify vertical hitch capacity if choosing this route) Winch dampener: I have: used firehose Most any weighted vest or dampener will do (preferably 2 - one at 25% distance the other at 75% distance). Used firehose is a good option (also great for covering sharp edges to reduce abrasion). I would also look for a snatch strap. I currently have an ARB (again used from someone getting out of wheeling). This I would stick to ARB or Smittybilt or Bubbarope. *** Warning *** Some will advertise or labeled as a snatch strap but will actually be a tow strap that has 0 kinetics built into it (requirement for snatch strap) Also good set of working gloves, tire puncture kit, valve stem kit (had to use this weekend) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0722WR8TV...ing=UTF8&psc=1 traction boards: I have Boaroffroad (orcish/ Xbulls). maxtraxx are great stack smaller then mine. Shovel and axe as well. I bought a combo kit, so far not issues. https://www.amazon.com/LIANTRAL-Surv...dp/B07P1S9L9G/ |
Shackles: Crosby
Straps: I'd strongly consider a kinetic rope from Yankum for recovery. Tow straps are generally less useful but if you have the room and budget, Factor 55 makes good ones. If you only have money or room for one, definitely go with the kinetic rope. Tree saver: Warn makes one Snatch block: Warn makes a nice one Winch line damper: Whatever weighted piece of fabric you have on hand. A jacket, a piece of firehose as mentioned above etc. This is also less important if using synthetic line as it typically just lays down if it snaps but still not a bad idea. |
Ronnie Dahl has a couple videos that are eye opening in terms of application and why it’s important to follow best practices. If I recall, dampers do next to nothing in case of a catastrophic failure. I believe he was using cable as opposed to synthetic line.

Currently using Factor 55, BubbaRope, Gator Jaw, and Overland Vehicle systems.
HOWEVER, the only two STEEL shackles I can recommend are either: Crosby or Van Beest. I have a family member who works for a company who sells equipment to Offshore Oil rigs in the Gulf. The ONLY shackles they sell are Crosby (lighter duty) or Van Beest up to 175 tons WLL. Crosby, mostly American made or Van Beest, made in the Netherlands. All of their shackles (both companies) can be ordered with the copies of the testing paperwork, engineering ratings etc., that back up the listed WLL. Try that with Chinese or Amazon stuff. I only use Van Beest shackles. AMLOR |
Smittybilt is highly recommended.

All my recovery gear is from Bubba Rope, Factor 55, ASR Offroad, ARB, Hi-Lift, and I have a Smittybilt X2O 10k Synthetic winch. I have a couple USA made D-ring shackles I got off eBay but I stick with soft shackles for everything.
As long as you buy from a brand name you are good to go. Everything I have has done it's job well so far. |
