Fox Shocks
I have a 09 Trail Edtion and just went over the 100k mile mark and am looking to get some new shocks. Is anyone on here running any kind of Fox Shocks? Would like something good for in the dunes.

They don't seem to be as popular on this forum for some reason. I'm on Tacoma world quite a bit and see them more often. There's also a guy that has good discounts on them. General consensus is that they're awesome.

I'm a desert / dune guy myself...
Out of all the high end shocks options… it’s the Fox 2.5 RR with DSC adjusters AND high flow piston upgrade I want the most. King does an amazing job of marketing to the desert crowd and for the longest time wanted a set for myself but the more I learned the more I started leaning towards Fox. For me it was primarily the way the adjustment controls worked. King adjusters only control high speed compression, whereas Fox you have independent adjustment for high speed and low speed compression. Considering traversing dunes has a lot of low speed compression events, I figured that would really help maximize tuning when driving around and having a lot of weight shift from wheel to wheel. I am currently running a 6112 but looking to upgrade, they work great until you start to push them harder, specifically in high speed compression events it feels like you blow though the entire shock stroke and it’s easy to bottom out. I don’t think the digressive valving works that great out there, which is another reason I decided against ICON when I upgrade. King and Fox both offer progressive valving, and as shaft speed increases, so does the resistance. Seems to make sense to me. Unfortunately the Fox shock are the most expensive out of the bunch, but I feel they might be worth it. https://i.imgur.com/ZHCUV52.jpg?1 https://i.imgur.com/WIfjY0Z.jpg?1 |
Not my stuff, but seems like a good deal on a full Fox setup.

Digressive vs Progressive they both increase their force when shaft speed increases. It's basic hydraulics. The rate at which their force increases with shaft speed is what is different. You can tune either to whatever you want to do. https://accutuneoffroad.com/wp-conte...Comparison.jpg |
That makes sense… I guess in my example, it’s the valving which isn’t ideal and the graphs also support what I am feeling.
I am not getting enough rate of increase with faster shaft speeds, it’s a flatter response when compared to progressive, but it does start off stiffer which is a characteristic of digressive, which makes it great on-road. My initial concern with progressive was it would be “too soft” and poor in controlling shifting weight (low speed), but after learning about the independent adjustments in the Fox I figured it would help with those concerns. That said, I don’t own any of these shocks yet… my thought are speculation. But I do have a bunch of seat time with my 6112. I know what I like about it, I know what I don’t like about it. Next purchase needs to be the “buy once cry once”. That said, I did run a lot of this stuff by AccuTune who are the ones which told me about Fox in the first place. |

I went back and forth about dropping more coin on a set of Icons, King or even Elka, but I honestly I couldn't justify it since my 4Runner is a weekend desert vehicle and barely put 5k miles a year on it. Icon seems to be a pretty popular option on the forums, along with King. Honestly though if you are not doing anything more than light/med off roading and driving around daily I feel the OME setups are more than sufficient, especially for sub $1200~ |

Budget in mind, it’s certainly worth consideration especially if you are comparing against regular size shocks. |

If you are shopping for small body fox shocks, I would go with the 60mm Bilstein 6112 instead. Considering I can get my shocks pretty hot just driving around out there, I can appreciate the additional oil volume. |
if Elka has come to the 4x4 4runner market id highly suggest people look into them. one of the most dominating suspension systems in ATV racings for well over a decade at least.

So I'm without any dune experience with my new-to-me AventuRunner, but the Fox 2.0 IFP setup in all four corners that the previous owner installed is really quite nice so far. Stiff, so little-to no brake dive on-road, but nicely tuned LSC for small bump compliance. I'm pretty happy with the setup and is a vast improvement over the fabtech coilovers/bilstein rear shocks on my 3rd gen. I'm sure you'd go with the 2.5 ext resi's if you go Fox, but for a little less, the 2.0's seem really solid so far. Just my 2 cents...

The biggest problem with the 2.0 is that they don’t offer DSC adjusters. It’s the adjustability I am wanting, more so than just the larger displacement. That said, after trying a larger body shock, I got sold on them. I guess that says still holds true, there is no replacement for displacement. |
