OEM Fuel tank skid plate part# question

1 Attachment(s)
Few days ago i had WTF moment while doing fluid film to my 4Runner. This is the first time I noticed the fuel tank skid plate is covering only first 1/3 of the fuel tank leaving 2/3 of plastic exposed to anything I drove over.

I go off road sometimes but I am not doing off-roading (I mean going on rocks etc.) so I do not have a need of having armor under the truck, but some kind of protection of plastic fuel tank would be nice. At least the same what I have in my 1995 Tacoma.

Then I search for it and I found that 5th gen 4Runner has factory skid plate covering the entire tank - at least what it looks on pictures. So I guess I will take a trip to my my local dealer (buying in USA plus international shipping to Poland is not cost effective) to look for factory full size tank skid. I am just confused about two different part numbers I found camelbacktoyota on-line:

1. Tank Shield
Part Number: 77606-60190
Other Names: Protector Sub-Assembly
Description: With skid plates.
Price: $250.30

2. Tank Shield
Part Number: 77606-60200
Other Names: Protector Sub-Assembly
Description: Without skid plates.
Price: $174.47

What is the difference? Both parts show the same picture (the same url for image file):

and the same location on the parts diagram:

Again, I don't want heavy duty skid I can slide on (i.e. aftermarket) just a tin can piece of metal between road debris and plastic fuel holder.

By the way the same part numbers are for Lexus GX460 - but the description is different:

77606-60190 = W/AIR SUSPENSION
77606-60200 = W/O AIR SUSPENSION

.

To be completely honest, just put up a wanted ad in the WTB FS thread and you will probably get a few hits from people getting rid of theirs (thats if you are willing to pay for shipping costs). And if youre gonna pay a dealer that kind of money for oem, aftermarket is MUCH better. I left mine with my mechanic to throw out with the garbage when i got my aftermarket one.

That's the sad reality of living outside of USA - local aftermarket is almost non-existing and shipping charges of bulk of heavy item is doubling the US price. Then EU customs is adding 23% VAT (that is 23% of price plus shipping) to make the overall cost of 2.5 more expensive than for USA folks. In that context OEM dealer price is quite attractive. Even if someone is giving that skid away, the shipping cost would make it cost more than a brand new one bought from a local Toyota dealer.

The real question is not how to buy it, but what to buy. It will be a special order for a dealer (in the whole country there are probably less than ten 5th gen 4Runners) and most of them are probably already converted to LPG. I just don't want to end up with the same half-skid what I already have. Part numbers are so confusing as they show both pictures (full and half skid) under the same part number.

Any resolution on this? I think the cheaper one is plastic and the other one is aluminum.

The description of the cheaper one says: "Without skid plates", the nore expensive is "With skid plates". Does it mean the plastic is 'without" and the metal one is "with"?

I have not buy it yet. Busy.

Fuel Tank Skid Plate - Install TE one on an SR5

Send him a PM.

IIRC At least initially the SR5 skids were only a front hit protector, first 1/3rd. The Trail and later TRD models had a full factory skid. It's just thin steel and easy to scrape and dent, but better than having exposed plastic.

I needed the full skid for what I thought was a small trail scrape. It was rubbing on the tank but barely made a mark. I removed the skid and bashed it out with a rubber mallet.
