JL Audio Speaker Upgrade Thread
Hi Everyone,
I've been doing research for several weeks now, and it seems like there is scattered information and no concise instruction about a full JL Audio C2 setup. @Mikey_Cheng , @Helix26404, @mallory25 has the best info on here, but still incomplete. Also, all three of these guys are inactive for over a year. My OE setup is JBL equipped, but fitment is identical from base audio to JBL. The setup would be: -Dash 3.5" JL Audio C2-350x Requires customizing the OE bracket, may need some material removed from plastic grille. This one is well documented here and here. -Front Door 6x9" JL Audio C2-690TX According to this it only requires Metra 82-8146 adaptor. I'm a little surprised as Crutchfield lists top mount depth as 3.25" and "does not fit your vehicle". Can anyone confirm regarding fitment? Windows roll up and down fine? Grille needs modification? -Rear Door + Liftgate 6.5" JL Audio C2-650x Virtually no information on here, other than this. Also listed as "does not fit your vehicle" by Crutchfield. Use Scosche SAT6 adaptor? My biggest concern is depth. Crutchfield lists the top mount depth as 2.56" Can anyone comment about fitment in rear door and/or hatch? I suspect hatch is the toughest fitment. Any kind of modification required? Any difference with using a TacoTunes adaptor vs. Metra/Scosche? Add to this post if you can, it would be helpful to have a thread containing install of JL Audio C2 speakers! Thanks! |
Im thinking of upgrading my 4R speakers to JL's, but i am not sure if they would be an improvement. Especially since i would rather not have to add an amp.
I generally use a local car audio place for my installs because they don't charge much and they have all the right parts and brackets to make it work. I may visit them and see what info i can gather then post back, they said last time there are brackets available. |

The JBL system is much, much better than the base audio... but still can use some improvements. If you do go the JL C2 route, post back and let us all know how install went! |
The OEM JBL system in the 4runner is crossed over on the amplifier and cannot be modified (crossover points nor gains). Not sure of the exact crossover point, but somewhere around 300 (+-100) Hz for the front speakers. The front doors play the lower frequencies and the dash the highs. The speakers that you listed have very different sensitivity values with the 3.5" at 83db 1w/1m and the 6x9 at 93db 1w/1m. So the doors will sound quite a bit louder relative to the dash and the fader will not do much as they share the front channel. I would look for speakers that have similar sensitivity for the front doors and dash so that they are level matched and sound at the same relative volume.

Anyone who has actually installed these JL Audio speakers and can comment (especially on the doors and hatch) about the install?
Front door: 6x9" C2-690TX Rear door + hatch: 6.5" C2-650x |
Did they end up fitting in the hatch and rear?
