LED fog light bulbs....
 

Ok, after a lot of reading I'm still confused as to our fog-light bulbs.

I replaced my low beams with the light bulb below labeled H11. So, far they seem better than the factory halogens, they are a lot whiter. I have not had the time or need to do a lot of night driving, but in a few trips around the neighborhood they seem better than halogen, not as good as HID. I can report that the fitment was perfect !!!, 15 minutes to change them both.

This has left me wanting to change the fog light bulbs (i usually leave them on all the time as they were driving lights).

Is there any consensus or opinions as to which style H16 bulb:

opt A - LEDs are all around (360 degrees) or opt B - LEDs are at 9 and 3 o'clock (like the newer style LED H11s) is better or more preferred.

lastly some of the Amazon reviews for the 'all in one' style of the H11 I used
(H11) imply they used it for both the headlight and the fog light.

It seems some of our posters are running the H11 as an H16.

q. Are they too bright ? (blinding other drivers), how is the pattern ?
from my fog lights I'm looking for a wide side to side coverage that is under the low beams.

I had LED fogs from XenonDepot, they were good but pain to install the passenger side, if you go that route pull the bumper. I ended up eventually getting Baja's after moisture issues. I should have and I recommend just going with Baja's, especially now that they street legal lights. Buy once, cry once.

from what I have read you want to buy the LEDs with the left right diode. not the all around. then when you install you want to make sure they are on the horizontal plane and not vertical.

H11 and H16 in a Japanese car are the same fitment the difference is that in halogen the h11 is 55w IIRC and the h16 is about 19w.
This is why you just get a H11 LED as they tend to max out around 12w from what I can see and you'll never melt the housing.

Or just spend $400 on Baja Designs.

FWIW I'm about to get the Alla yellow lets for my fogs.

I just discovered these today, and since they are OEM I will start with these. Only concern I have is if they are too cool of a color temp at 6000K. From pics I've seen comparing to stock halogens these go much wider so it's easier to see where you're turning better at night.

At $429, are they really that much better than some of the best bulb options out there?

That's what I would love to know.

Are they really a big difference maker offroad? I understand that the 100$ OEM ones are made in China but 429 for fog lights is seriously steep. I guess it may make sense for people intentionally running in the dark but we have been good at avoiding that for 10 years. I want something just in case but not something that pricey. And I don't really need to go fast to get back to pavement.

As for road use, eh, I am sure the OEM bulbs are fine for me.

I've read a few reviews and most are repurposing them and getting OEM or morimotos for the fogs

Fog lights Used:

I put these in today, (and it is still light out so i have not had the ability to road test them). Dark garage test was much better the the oem bulbs.

I can say - go at the fog lights from underneath !!!

on the passenger side remove the bottom 2 screws for the fender liner, it will make getting your hand up to the fog light bulb much easier. There was no need to remove the plastic guard behind the fog light bulb on the passenger side.

For clarification, driving lights are white and fog lights are yellow. Beam pattern not with standing. As yellow reflects less off the fog than white offering better visibility in foggy conditions and also help in white out snow conditions. Make sure you buy what you need, not what people tell you that you want. Just my opinion.....

LED “bulbs” should not be used in your original headlamps or fog lamps.

If you want LED fog lamps, consider the Toyota kit.

I am 100% in agreement with your post. When i lived in New England (worked off 93 on the south shore and in Framingham), true fog lights (yellow) were invaluable (especially in the snow). Now I'm in the desert (no fog - or not enough to worry about). I, like probably many others, use the 'fog lights' as driving lights / cornering lights. The added peripheral illumination they provide can be invaluable (when a kid dressed in dark clothes darts across a 6 lane street on his bicycle on a dark and rainy night). :toilet: Back in the White Mountains or Green Mountains i'd prefer yellow over white anyday, but here in a desert city the color is not as important to me as is the peripheral illumination, and not blinding other drivers.

Referencing the point made about reflectors, I was under the impression the our headlights are projectors and the foglights are reflectors. Thank you Toyota for giving us both :rolleyes: Many members have had success upgrading the headlights with LED (though HIDs are even better), and upgrading the foglights with XD leds. In my opinion, the most important factor would be to not decrease vision, and the second most important factor would be to not bling other drivers. (Though if you drive around Phoenix at night, the second most important factor is often not observed).

That said it has not been long enough to grade the headlights though the few times i've used them, they seemed better than stock and no flashes yet. Fog lights will take a while till i can put some miles on them at night. It appears the LED technology has come a long way in a fairly short period of time. From the 'all in one' headlight bulb i used to the newer 4 sided led fog light, these are making bulb swaps easier and safer.

Interesting point you've got about the lights, makes me wonder why they are not called driving lights or cornering lights and I'd guess the car company's lawyers have something to do with that.
