just another reason why I really like Toyotas.
My daughter in law took her 2017 ford with about 43k and extended warranty in for repairs.things she thought some should be under the warranty..No back up lights, passenger heat seater not working, auto door locks not working. they replaced bulbs, heater switch and fixed broken wires in harness to driver door. Of course none of it under warranty, considered standard wear items....really...standard wear ? at 2 years old and 43k...standard wear ? ok bulbs maybe,,,

"Built Ford Tough" is the slogan they apply to their trucks, which do have a reputation for reliability. Their cars? Probably vary wildly.
When I was at the 'first car' age, my friends and I all got VW Bugs or similar as first and/or second cars. Looking at the Japanese cars of the day (early Toyota Corolla, Datsun[Nissan] B210 etc), I swore I'd never own a Japanese car.
Now, I only want a Japanese car(or truck)!

Hence the nick names Found On Road Dead, Fix Or Repair Daily. My super reliable 374K DD 3rd gen is evidence of pride of workmanship by the manufacturer.

I drive my 92 Geo Prizm (Toyota Sprinter for ASIA/Europe/Australia/ME/Africa) as my daily driver and to date no switch including ignition or harness wires has been replaced or touched! and it is at 276K miles. I can call it built tough! I rebadged it as Toyota Sprinter and once I got pulled over for not having a matching model and tag...

All the bulbs (except headlights) are original as well! Koito!!

Same here. Used to call it Jap Crap. In truth; lots of new vehicles are just throw away cars. With the price of a Ford truck costing up to $80k; it better be build tough. Same with the other makes.

I sold a Ford F150 this summer because I couldn't justify keeping another vehicle around for occasional hauling of debris to the landfill when I had a utility trailer that could do the same thing without maintaining an engine, insurance, or registration. We have permanent tags for them in AZ.

I absolutely respect the workmanship that goes into Japanese made vehicles but didn't always. American car manufacturers could take a page from the Japanese quality control methods and standards.

There are no perfect machines of any kind but I do believe Honda and Toyota come closer than anyone else on the planet to that goal. Even they have the occasional lemon though.

I feel like American cars focus too much R&D on gadgets. There's research to show though that your average millennial cares more about "connectivity" then reliability or low cost of ownership, stuff that actually matters. As long as it's got a touch screen, cameras all over the place and has auto-pilot so one can text while driving as much as they want they will keep selling those kind of cars.

I swapped out my horns in my 4Runner to louder ones just so I can get their attention back on the road.

They called it Saturn and they're dead now.

I currently have a 2012 F150 Raptor and Im looking to get into a 4runner TRD next. I don't think I would buy another Ford after this one. The engine and drivetrain are solid I feel like, but everything around it just falls apart due to the poor build quality. Hoping Toyota is a lot better.

My BIL bought an F250 years ago. It had only 30+k miles on it (not 130k, 230k or 330k). Very soon thereafter, he had to have the transmission completely rebuilt.

I have heard too many horror stories about incredibly stupid things going wrong with "American" vehicles (which so happens, most are made in Canada or Mexico now, if I understand correctly), that I doubt I will ever buy an "American" vehicle. Stories about transmissions actually falling out on the road, etc.

I like my Toyotas, Mazdas and Nissans, many of which happen to have actually been built in the USA.

What I like about Japanese vehicles is that in their design, they look ahead many years. American vehicle designs look ahead a few short years or maybe even just months ("Let's just worry about what the shareholders think this month").

To learn from one's mistakes is smart. To learn from other's mistakes is wise.

I just like to make fun of Ford because my brother owns one, but American trucks are pretty great when it comes to ½ ton and larger… I prefer GM products myself, my Silverado has been with me longer than my 4Runner.

Eventually id like a GMC Denali 2500hd diesel when it comes time to upgrade. Then ill just tow my 4Runner to places I want wheel it.

Plus I can tow it with my Silverado just fine... I just want to pull a small house behind me while I do it as well.
