Im not an AZ native but while I was out there I drove a rental car from PHX up the apache trail through the superstition mountains. The dirt roads were somewhat well maintained. A few offshoots looked fun. Beautiful drive and the Dam and bridge up at Roosevelt lake were spectacular. Really close to PHX as well.

The landscape was totally foreign to me so maybe Im overhyping it. I think it would be a good spot to get to know your new ride though.

Hi, I am new to this forum - I just purchased a 2018 T4R TRD Off Road Premium. I do have a couple of questions: 1. What is the "S" mode used for? What does the + or - change in S mode? 2. I am looking to tow a small cargo trailer - anyone have any suggestions/advice?

Thank you
Andy

Wait for the new Wells Arizona guide, should be out in spring. It will keep you busy for years.

Supplement that with Jeep the USA website. The descriptions are short but they do offer free GPX files and some of their trails are gems not found in Wells.

Be aware that the JeepTheUSA folks write for lifted 2-dr Rubicons on 37s. Generally, I find their 2 rated trails to be the easy trails in Wells, their 2.5 to be the moderate in Wells, and their 3s to be the difficult but suitable for stock 4x4 in Wells. 3.5s get very serious.

If you want to get started, some great Phoenix area loops are:

Apache Trail + Four Peaks. Apache Trail is a dirt road and Four Peaks is an easy trail, just don't get distracted by the awesome views, you can fall off a cliff :) This route offers some of the most lush desert you can see due to all the water.

New River Canyon with return via Bloody Basin Rd. Two great trails combined into an awesome route that crosses different types of desert. New River is slow in spots, or not that slow, depending on driver and vehicle setup. Wells has it as moderate. Bloody Basin is a dirt road with some short easy trail sections.

More out of the way is Agua Caliente road but it does offer a classic Sonoran desert (no water).

Those three routes are a good start with respect to the scenery. A very nice starter trail for some low range use is Fort Thule-China Dam. And so on and so forth.

Generally, stay away from the most crowded trails, unless you enjoy the offroad version of NYC traffic. Especially true of Backway to Crown King, which does not offer any special scenery anyway. It is a nice trail, to be sure, but not great and the traffic makes for a miserable experience on weekends (there are two spots where you will need extra care if you are 100% stock).

That is an amazing find! My dad used to have one like this when I was a kid. That was one of the few vehicles we always loved.
