Fuel pump problem

I bought a 1994 Toyota 4Runner. It has the 3.0 v6 engine in it. It wouldn’t crank so we sprayed a little fuel in the intake and it fired and ran long enough to burn up what we sprayed in. The truck had set up for a few years so we Dropped the fuel tank And found that the fuel pump wasn’t working. I cleaned the tank and put a new fuel pump but I “COULDNT GET POWER BACK TO THE PUMP”
I ended up wiring the pump straight and it would crank and run for a little while but then shut off. My question is does the sending unit have anything to do with getting the power back to the pump?

I believe there's a fuel pump relay on our trucks. Haven't had to deal with it myself.

First off you don't have to drop the tank to access the fuel pump. There is a access panel under the passenger rear seat. There are two things that need to happen for the fuel pump to turn on and stay on. The first is the COR relay. This is under the dash behind/ next to the glove box. It is a common failing point. When you turn the key to the on position you should hear this relay click. The second thing that needs to happen is the air intake tubing need to be hooked up the the air flow meter. When the flapper door is pulled open by the air flowing through it it all so activates the COR relay. You can bypass these by jumping B+ and Fp in the diagnosis connector next to the under hood fuse box.
