What's everyone breaking when they offroad?
I want to get some statistics. It'd be cool to gather some to help people make appropriate plans. i.e. bring special tools and spare parts.

So far, tie rod, axle. Broke the gas skid plate, it was stock and on stock height. Dented the gas tank and had to replace it.

Cv axle

One of my 1 year old KO2 tires. Small but long and sharp stick found its way through the sidewall close to the tread, leaving it slowly leaking. I'd suggest a quick tire patch kit/fix-a-flat so you can patch it properly when you get back.
Luckily I have warranty on the tire and am getting a free replacement. |
As mentioned, it all depends. There are two types of offroading, exploration and the sports of racing or crawling.
Sometimes the boundary is not clearly defined but so long as you don't trespass on the other side, you can do with no breakage. So far for me, I had minor bumper issues on my Outback, tore a fender flare off on the 4R, and have some scars underneath and on the bumper covers. Tires don't count as damage. I do have full set of 3/16 skids and upgraded rear LCAs. My front 3/16 RCI skid is mangled on the front end completely (speed). Once you move over to high speed or tall rocks, you would absolutely have to prepare for what the pictures above (thanks for those) illustrate. |

Well since this got spam-bumped, I hope no one minds if I hijack it.
I'm planning my first real off road trip this spring (Flagpole Knob for any locals) and some of the trail looks a little rough. I've checked with the local 4x4 FB group and the consensus is that a stock 3rd Gen should be ok. My main worry is busting something on the undercarriage on a rock. I've got the stock skid plate but that's it. The dynamic dampener seems to hang sorta low - is that something I should remove before I hit the trail? I'm going to have a spotter, and obviously I'll take it slow, but I wanted to know if there was anything I should be particularly careful about in my 3rd Gen. |
So far just front sway link and outer tie rod. Can't complain about that.

Mostly just rattling bolts loose, especially on the rear end links. I’ve also put a stick through a CV boot which required me to change the CV on the trail.
