4th Gen Rear Bumper Options

Calling all 4th gen owners with rear bumpers.. post pics and feedback of your rear bumper setup. I have the Wilco Tire Carrier but I'm leaning towards getting a high clearance dual-swing out bumper.

Thoughts?

I got together with RLC Welding & Fabrication right here in Louisville to be the 4th gen guinea pig. I specifically wanted a single swing-out since my cooking drawer pulls out on the passenger side and I didn't want anything behind me. I chose to go with Rotopax mounting and a pocket for an S2 flush mount, but those little things can be customized.

This might be a tease, since they're not primarily an off-road shop I'm not sure if he's interested in reproducing a non-standard bumper (the 4th gen was a chore). But you can always give the owner a call and see what they have going on. Super nice guy and easy to work with.

This probably isn't going to help you any...
I couldn't find a full replacement that I really liked, and I do like the lines on the stock cover. Made swing outs that bolt to the frame.

both are very nice!

You have pics of the process? Or more detailed pics of how it’s mounted? Looks awesome!

Thanks! I don't wan't to go hijacking the thread... Here's a pic under the cover while it was in progress, removed the tie down/recovery loop under the frame and used those points, also added some weld in threaded insert things from McMaster on the top of the frame. There was also some additional bracing on the bracket that I added later.

I should do a build thread, but think I'm probably too lazy to keep up with it... lol

I actually am wanting to do the same to my rig, you mind if I shoot you a PM on how to build the thing?

I have a welder so can do all the fab work myself.

Also interested in this, cleanest swing outs I’ve seen. I don’t really have the need for a full bumper but need my full size spare. Currently on the RIGD Ultraswing but this looks cleaner and dual swingouts!

Arguably one of the most creative ideas I've seen. So clean and consistent with the OEM look of the 4th gen. I love it.

Thanks man!

Gonna be straying from the OEM look on the front end soon... :naughty:

Man I love this so much, I have no need for a armored rear bumper but I love the utility of having a place to mount a spare and Jerry cans. That solution would be perfect without the additional weight of a rear bumper.

If you are handy with a welder at all or want to learn, the most cost effective option would be the bumper kit from Coastal Offroad. I have both front and rear bumpers from them on my 1999 Tacoma and plan on going that route for the 4runner as well.

I've had an idea rolling around in my head that looks a lot like this, and seeing your pictures - definitely think this is what I'll be building in the future. Me likey.

gfxcruncher 01-30-2020 08:32 PM

wow, thanks everyone!

@apohl17 & @SHagood you guys have great build threads going, there's so many good ones on here.
Seems like I should start one since 99% of my projects begin with some crazy idea someone has posted on here... Sorry for all the NON rear bumper option chatter.
